NewtonSERVES Volunteer Opportunity – Community Service ALERT!

We’re looking for 60-80 PARENT and STUDENT volunteers to come to NSHS on Sunday, April 28, from 12:30–3:30PM to complete our outdoor project. NewtonSERVES, with the Newton South PTSO, plans to weed our gardens, spread mulch, pick-up trash, and plant annuals. Come join over 1,200 other NewtonServes volunteers across the city who will complete other projects in our schoolyards, parks, and recreation areas. We cannot do our project without YOU.

  • Community Service Alert: This is a great community service opportunity for students! The college common application asks about it. NewtonSERVES is a great project to include on your list!
  • Get fit: Researchers estimate that gardening burns an average of 300 calories per hour, while heavy yard work can burn more than 600 calories per hour!
  • Reduce stress: Connecting with nature, digging in the dirt, even weeding reduce stress. We could all use a little less stress in our lives.

Please bring your own gloves and tools (shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows). Be sure to label them with your name. The PTSO will provide water and a pizza lunch and NewtonSERVES will provide t-shirts. To volunteer, please email Shannon Smith at
