From the Principal: Sign up by Jan. 24 for NSHS Community Dinner

Dear NSHS Families:

I am writing to invite you to join me and many other Newton South families and educators at our first annual Community Dinner on Saturday, February 1 – details below!

You may have missed that this past Sunday, January 19, in the Boston Globe, reporter Evan Allen wrote an article about parent-teacher organizations (PTOs) and the key role they currently play in technology funding in Newton. I am thrilled to have an excellent partnership with our PTSO (parent-teacher-student organization), and our students and faculty absolutely respect and enjoy the many PTSO contributions to the NSHS experience over the years.

Each year, through its membership drive and fundraising for SouthFest, the NSHS PTSO is able to collect funds that it channels right back into the school. To date, the focus of PTSO spending has been to fund classroom innovation, enhance student life, and engage our community through communications and parent events. Please click here for specific examples. As you can see from the 2013-2014 budget approved at our November 20, 2013 meeting, the NSHS PTSO plans to put $68,300 back into Newton South this year alone.

In light of the fact that Newton North has raised more money than South the past few years, this year the NSHS PTSO also created the Success@South fund. This year’s goal is to raise an additional $20,000 to transform the outdated library environment into a flexible learning space with 100 feet of technology counters that will better facilitate inquiry, synergy and the communication of ideas. To date – thanks to you, our generous parents – we have already raised $14,000, and are 70% of the way there! The Success@South Committee has been hard at work – bids are being collected and installation plans are being made. Our goal is for the renovation to take place over April vacation, so that even our graduating seniors will get some time to enjoy the new library.

To help close the remaining gap, the PTSO has put together a fabulous first annual Community Dinner on Saturday, February 1, from 6-10PM. However, more important than any amount of money raised, the Community Dinner is a rare occasion for the adults in the Newton South community to come together and celebrate the very special place that makes such a difference in the lives of all of our students.  I will be joining parents, housemasters, and department heads for an evening of fun and relaxation – and we want you to join us, too! The deadline to register is Friday, January 24. Please click here for more information or click here to register.

Just because the Patriots aren’t playing in the big game, don’t let your Super Bowl weekend be a bust. Join us for the Community Dinner!

Warm regards,
Joel
