Senior Alekhya Chaparala, Athlete of the Week, Track and Field

This week’s Athlete of the Week is Senior Alekhya Chaparala. According to Steve McChesney, girl’s Track and Field Coach, “Alekhya is a two season team captain with a powerful voice as she commands the respect and admiration of all of her teammates with her caring and devotion to the team as well as to the sport. She has helped mentor kids in the high jump, long hurdles and distance events and has been extremely valuable in the development of many of our varsity scorers as well as our new members. She is an extremely gifted athlete as she has earned six DCL All Star honors in Track and Field and has earned DCL honors in soccer as well. Alekhya is that rare athlete that has competed at the high varsity level in sprints, hurdles, jumps, distance and relays. She has qualified for nationals in two relays. She ran the 400 leg on a distance medley in 2011 that placed 6th at indoor nationals and earned an All American honor. She makes excelling look easy, but Alekhya is an extremely hard working athlete and has earned every award with sheer will. Alekhya shows our team the meaning of student athlete every day. She has earned high honor roll and honor roll all three years and has also earned the Goldrick Principal’s Award. Cornell will be getting our very best next year. In addition, the season has gotten off to a great start as Alekhya won the first event, the 400 meter hurdles, in our opener against Boston Latin and Wayland on Wednesday.”
