The MIAA has established the Educational Athletics Achievement Award to commemorate various leaders in its member schools across Massachusetts. This award mirrors the pillars of “Educational Athletics” in which MIAA sets its framework: Sportsmanship, Coaches Education, Wellness, Community Service, and Leadership. Interscholastic athletic competition is an extension of the classroom and an educational activity that provides outstanding opportunities to teach life lessons.
Rich Riley, MIAA Assistant Director, recently contacted Athletic Director Pat Gonzalez after reading about South’s Girls Soccer team sponsoring a car wash and donating the funds to the Pine Street Inn and Rosie’s Place. He also discovered through his conversation with Pat that the other Fall athletic programs at Newton South were each involved in community service projects, as part of the school’s first-ever Lion’s Pride Day. With the goal of honoring outstanding athletics, the MIAA will present the Educational Athletics Achievement Award in Leadership to the Girls Soccer Team and in Community Service to the Boys Cross-Country, Girls Cross-Country, Field Hockey, Football, Golf, Boys Soccer, and Volleyball Teams. The presentation will take place on Tuesday, October 7 at 9:40 AM to honor each of the eight teams in a brief ceremony at the school. Congratulations to the Lions of the Fall!
