The role of the School Council is to advise the Principal on budget, school improvement plans, and other issues of general interest. The council is comprised of administration, faculty, parents, and students. Over the 2014-15 academic year, the NSHS School Council has collaborated to conduct background research regarding adolescent sleep and the implications of a later school start time. The council also hosted a community forum on this topic in April. We look forward to continuing to focus on topics of importance to our Newton South students and community.
The term of office is two years, with a second 2-year term allowed upon mutual agreement. Parents/guardian members are expected to attend meetings one Tuesday of each month during the school year (October-June) and occasionally meet/collaborate between meetings to move key initiatives forward. Meetings are in the Faculty Dining Room from 4:30 to 6:00pm.
We need two parents to join the current parent representatives: Chris Steele (2017), Jodi Detjen (2016), Risa Shames (2017), and Liz Hiser (2017). We offer a grateful thank you to Susan Kirshenbaum and Nancy Bauer whose terms (and time at South) ends this year.
Candidates should submit a brief statement of up to 250 words to address the following:
- Identify the elementary and middle school attended by your NSHS student
- Particular interest, background, skills, and expertise that have prepared you for the role
- Qualities you would bring to the School Council
Please submit statements to firstname.lastname@example.org by 5:00PM on May 18. Elections will be held online starting on May 20 and ending on June 3 at 12:00 noon. New members will be invited to attend the final meeting of this year, Tuesday June 16. Come make a difference at Newton South!
