Athlete of the Week — Caroline Barry, Girls Cross Country

Our Athlete of the Week is sophomore Caroline Barry. According to Steve McChesney, Girls Cross Country coach, “This time last year, Caroline was not active because of an ACL injury. She worked at a level that I rarely see as a freshman in indoor and spring track to be able to qualify for the state division meet in the mile and make our All State 4 x 800 team. This was a great feat itself.

“Now she is participating in her first season of cross country, and she is making a huge impact for us. From our very first workout this season, her dedication has paid off in big ways, leading our team by example and by her placement in our top 4 on varsity. At the DCL relays, she ran our 4th fastest time on the team as our top two teams went 1, 2 among all DCL teams on a short course. Going into our 1st dual meet of the season, we were missing one of our top 3 runners, and I told the girls that we needed kids to step up if we had any chance of beating the 4th-ranked team in the state, Lincoln-Sudbury. Caroline stepped up in a big way by running as our 3rd runner behind our Boston Globe All Stars Clare Martin and Rebecca Grusby, and she beat their 3rd runner. This was her first full-length cross country meet. Caroline is one of the toughest athletes I have coached in a while, and her determination is inspiring. We were ranked 10th in the state in the MA State Track Coaches Poll, and I have seen the newest poll, and we have moved up to 7th. This is a good team, and making our varsity is not an easy task for a new athlete. Caroline has not only made our varsity, she has made our varsity much stronger.”
