The 2015-2016 Newton South School Council is off to a strong start. The Council is a representative committee of students, parents, faculty and community members that work with the Principal on school-wide issues. This year we will be continuing our focus on educating the community on the benefits of a later start for high school students and introducing parents to the concept of “growth mindset,” which our faculty as well as the Newton North community, have been discussing.
There has been important progress at the School Committee level on later start. The SC appointed a small Working Group to develop a roadmap to determine the necessary steps to make a later high school start time happen in Newton. The Working Group started with the premise that the Newton Public Schools and the Newton School Committee believe that a later high school start time has important health and wellness benefits for adolescents. You can find a presentation of their work to date, as well as other information about South School Council and these initiatives here.
