Athlete of the Week — Gabe Betancourt, Wrestling

This week’s Athlete of the Week is Wrestling tri-captain Gabe Betancourt. According to Wrestling coach, Alan Rotatori, “After being injured all of last year’s season and having to sit out the entire winter, Gabe worked extremely hard in the off-season to recover and return a better wrestler than when he left. That was evident at this past weekend’s Devin Ness Memorial Tournament at Oliver Ames, where in the semi-finals he had to face Methuen’s Billy Whering — last year’s Massachusetts D1 state champion and 3rd place finisher at All-States. Billy is ranked #2 overall this year on, while Gabe is not ranked at all due to last year’s injury. Gabe proceeded to beat Billy in a thrilling 2-1 match before advancing to the tournament finals, where he beat his opponent from BC High handily. Gabe was presented with the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament award, and we are very proud of Gabe with all that he’s been able to accomplish so early in his total recovery process. He has extremely high expectations for himself this year, and we have no doubt he will exceed all the goals he has set!”
