Boys Swimming and Diving: Jordi Boulerice is the Newton South Boys Athlete of the Week. Jordi is a sophomore diver on the Swimming and Diving team. On Tuesday, January 5, Jordi broke a 19-year-old record with a score of 252.00 on the 1-meter diving board. Last years ‘Rookie of the Year,’ Jordi began his 2015-16 season with 1st place victories in each of our first 5 meets. According to Coach Phillip Martin,”He has grown both physically and mentally as an athlete. He dives with such finesse and precision, that as his degree of difficulty continues to rise, so does his score and dominance in the sport.” Last season, Jordi earned 13th place at the Division 1 State meet and is looking to improve on that mark this year. “A great teammate, Jordi has been known to hop in and swim a leg of a relay, but is most often seen cheering on his teammates and brother Quinn. Quinn, a senior, is shining in the pool as well, qualifying for Sectionals in multiple swimming events. Together these two boys have made an enormous impact on our team and look to continue making waves in the DCL.”
Girls Swimming and Diving: Madison Hofert is the Newton South Girls Athlete of the Week. Madison is a Junior on the Swimming and Diving team and current record holder in the 100 Backstroke, 200 Medley, and 200 Free Relay. Last season, she made herself known in the DCL by finishing 3rd at Championships and has started this year undefeated in 100 Backstroke. According to Martin,”Along with Madison’s dominance in backstroke, she has developed into a top freestyle sprinter and will again be putting her skills to the test at States in both events. Madison is a sparkplug for our team. She starts off every meet with a Backstroke leg in the Medley Relay and sets the tone for the meet.” Her hard work and perseverance will make her a top finisher again in the 2016 state championships.
