Athlete of the Week — Clare Martin, Girls Indoor Track

Junior Clare Martin won the 1000-meter race in last Sunday’s MSTCA Coaches Elite Invitational, which is a state-wide event for the top 30 ranked girls in Massachusetts in each event.  Her NSHS record time of 2:51.84 is the fastest time in the state and ranks 2nd in the country!  That alone stands out as an historic outing as it ranks as one of the best races in NSHS’s storied history.  There have been several state champions and All- Americans who race that distance, so this is a very lofty school record.

This past weekend, Clare took 2nd in the Dual County League mile in a stellar time of 4:57.93, which ranks 20th in the nation.  On Sunday, Clare notched her second school record of the season, running the 600 meters in 1:35.35, which ranks 8th in the nation.  When you put together her marks across three different distances, this is a very rare achievement.  She is able to move up and down in distance and compete at a national level in every race.  We’re proud to have Clare as Newton South’s Athlete of the Week.
