Seniors Receive Athletics Awards

The Fitness, Health, Wellness, and Athletics Senior awards were presented during the Senior Awards night on May 25. These awards are the highest recognition that an athlete can receive at Newton South.

Sabrina Stacks received the Betty Sabetti Award. This award is presented to a female athlete who has demonstrated great physical skills and leadership abilities. Sabrina participated in Field Hockey and Track and Field during her four years at South. Her coaches remark that she is always looking for ways to help her team compete in any event she is asked to do. She is an enthusiastic leader who has had a great impact in both Field Hockey and Track.

Alex Kiritsy received the Leonard Adelman Award. This award is given to a male athlete who has shown leadership, hard work, perseverance, and dedication in his four years at South. Alex’s coaches commended him for his leadership skills. He is a captain who leads by example and who  is not afraid to express his ideas. Coaches notice that Alex is the first one in the gym and the last one to leave, that he doesn’t look for short cuts, and that he is resilient and is always working constantly to sharpen his skills. Alex’s leadership was evident in his four years at South by being selected Captain of the Basketball and Soccer teams, sports he played for four years at South.

Rebecca Grusby and Anthony Denitto were awarded the Danny Mendelson Award, which is given to a male and a female senior who possess outstanding athletic ability, are leaders, and are positive examples to his/her peers.  These two athletes are respected by all and put the team ahead of themselves and have added much to the life of Newton South.

Rebecca is a quiet leader who gives a 100% every time she is on the track or running the cross country course. She is a positive example for her peers. Her work ethic is legendary, and her nonchalant demeanor makes her easy to approach by her teammates. Rebecca has received may accolades in her four years at South,including Division 1 and DCL Championships, All Scholastic distinctions, and All American determination.

Anthony is a man of many talents, and athleticism is one of them. His outstanding physical ability keep opponents and team mates in awe. However, Anthony stands out for his ability to lead, his sense of humor, and his humble demeanor. He is the athlete who all underclassman want to emulate and follow. He understands and embraces this responsibility, and he is a positive role model to all. Anthony played Football, Basketball, and Track and Field during four years at South. He has received numerous DCL All Star distinctions; he won the Division 1 and New England Championships; he placed 3rd in the National Decathlon competition. He is an All Scholastic and All American.

Each of these four outstanding athletes received a special watch donated by the Booster Club.
