Athletes of the Week

Jeff Vardi and Joe Vedensky, Wrestling

The Wrestling Athletes of the Week are Jeff Vardi and Joe Vedensky. You might think they earned this honor because of an outstanding win/loss record, but this is not what defines these two athletes. Jeff and Joe are captains this year, and if there was a year that our program needed role models and leaders this was it. Jeff is the lone senior in the program, and we have ten first-year wrestlers, most of whom are in the starting lineup. Jeff and Joe’s tireless efforts have brought this team to a new level of competition and camaraderie. The impressive part is that the two of them have suffered major injuries this year and not once lost track of their focus to the team. While being injured, they were often seen on the side of the mat encouraging their teammates and giving valuable feedback, almost like having another assistant coach. These two mature, dedicated athletes are the reason why the Wrestling program will thrive in the future. Thank you for all you do for this program and this school community.—Coach Rotatori

Andrew Johnston, Swimming and Diving

Another Athlete of the Week comes to us from the pool. Senior swimmer Andrew Johnston has been a leader in and out of the water for Newton South Swimming and Diving. Andrew is a constant source of energy and enthusiasm for our team. You can hear Andrew’s “whooop” from outside the pool area. A top scorer every year, Andrew constantly battles for a top finish. His goal every meet is to swim the hardest, longest races and outlast anyone who wants to swim against him. Andrew will be looking to lead his team to a top-10 finish at States this season.—Coach Martin
