Deadline to Apply for School Council Candidacy is May 12

The role of the Newton South School Council is to advise the Principal on issues of general interest and school improvement plans. The council is comprised of administration, faculty, parents, and students. Over the 2016-2017 academic year, the Council has continued its advocacy around later school start time by supporting the School Committee’s Working Group on late start. We are pleased that the School Committee has voted to change the high school schedule to accommodate a later start time in future years. Next year, one of our projects will be learning about the principles and values that different high school schedules bring to a school. In addition, the Council has begun a multi-year exploration of the school culture at Newton South. This year, we focused on gaining a better understanding of some of the challenges of being a student and a teacher at Newton South by meeting with students and faculty who are part of South’s mental health and wellness groups. Next year, we plan to continue these conversations and determine how the School Council can have a positive impact on these issues.

The term of office for a member of the School Council is two years, with the ability to run for a second two-year term. Members are expected to attend meetings one Tuesday of each month from 4:30 to 6:00PM during the school year (October to June) and occasionally meet/collaborate between meetings to move key initiatives forward. Members are also asked to take notes and bring snacks at least once during the school year.

This year we have three open seats and two members running for re-election. We extend a grateful thank you to Chris Steele, who is leaving the Council because he will no longer have a student at South. Chris has been a wonderful asset on the Council for three years, two as co-chair. Sue Flicop and Kathi Shaw Bassett have completed their first term and will be running for re-election. Risa Shames, Clare Landrigan, Michelle Luo and Martha Hausman are in the middle of their terms.

Candidates should submit a brief statement of up to 250 words to address the following:

  • Identify the elementary and middle school attended by your NSHS student
  • Particular interest, background, skills, and expertise that have prepared you for the role
  • Qualities you would bring to the School Council

Please submit statements to info@newtonsouthptso.org by 5PM on May 12. Elections will be held online starting on May 15 and ending on May 30 at noon. New members will be invited to attend the final meeting of this year, Tuesday June 13.

Come make a difference at Newton South!
