Coach Killilea to Retire

After 40 years of working with the student-athletes at Newton public schools, coach Joe Killilea is retiring from his position as head coach of the Newton South Boys Varsity Basketball. Principal Stembridge wrote the following note to our basketball community regarding coach Killilea: “I want to acknowledge and thank Coach Joe Killilea for his outstanding contributions to the Boys Varsity Basketball program at Newton South. Coach K started at South in 1977 as the JV coach, and was named Varsity Coach in the 1979–80 season. Since that time, his teams have earned 482 wins, numerous DCL titles, 3 South Sectional victories, and a trip to the state finals in 1982. Coach K held demanding practices and had a passion for defense. But, more importantly, he sought to teach players life skills that would serve them well both on and off the court. Through the sport of basketball, he taught our young people the importance of hard work, toughness, and grit. Coach K is fiercely loyal, an unrelenting advocate, and a life-long mentor for his players. On behalf of present and former Newton South basketball families and players, I extend gratitude and appreciation for his 40 years of service to the Newton South Boys Basketball program.”
