The role of the Newton South School Council is to advise the Principal on issues of general interest and school improvement plans. The Council is comprised of administrators, faculty, parents, and students. Over the 2017-2018 academic year, the Council has been exploring the school culture at Newton South. We focused on gaining a better understanding of some of the challenges of being a student and a teacher at Newton South with the goal of establishing mechanisms to build a stronger school community.
The term of office for a member of the School Council is two years, with the ability to run for a second two-year term. Members are expected to attend meetings one Tuesday of each month from 4:30 to 6:00PM during the school year (October to June) and occasionally meet/collaborate between meetings to move key initiatives forward. Members are also asked to take notes and bring snacks at least once during the school year.
This year we have two open seats. We extend our thanks to Risa Shames who is leaving the Council because she will no longer have a student at South. Risa has been a wonderful asset on the Council, serving as co-chair for two of her years and contributing greatly to the later high school start time initiative. Sue Flicop is also leaving the Council to focus on professional activities and we are very appreciative of her time and thoughtful contributions as a member.
Candidates should submit a brief statement of up to 250 words to address the following:
- Identify the elementary and middle school attended by your NSHS student
- Particular interest, background, skills, and expertise that have prepared you for the role
- Qualities you would bring to the School Council
Please submit statements to email@example.com by 5PM on June 8th. Elections will be held online starting on June 10th and ending on June 15th at noon.
Come make a difference at Newton South!
