Every year South sophomores, juniors, and seniors have the opportunity to go on a week-long trip to Washington DC as part of the Close Up Program. Last year, Bob Parlin, Lisa Soo Hoo, and Jessica Engel brought 27 students to DC to learn about how government works and to gain a greater understanding of how their actions can make a difference.
This year’s trip is scheduled from March 3 to March 8, and enrollment is now open, with registration and a $400 deposit due by November 1. The week is truly a life-changing experience for many of our attendees, as they get the chance to meet with students from around the country to debate issues, hold a mock Congress, visit with our Senators and Congressman Kennedy, and become familiar with the city’s many monuments and museums.
If you are interested in more information about Close Up, go to www.closeup.org. We will be holding an information session for students interested in the trip J-Block next Wednesday, October 10, in Room 2310. The total cost for the trip is $1732, and that covers the flight to DC, the rooming, the staff for the programs, the meals, and admission to the museums (most of which are free). Partial financial aid is also available to those who qualify.
If you would like to register for the trip, just send an email to Bob Parlin firstname.lastname@example.org or Lisa Soo Hoo email@example.com with the name of your child. They will then send you a code to register online. Close Up is a civics experience like no other, a program that we wish all South students could take part in.
