Explore the FAQs on the PTSO Website

Did you know that there is an FAQ section on the PTSO website? It has a lot of useful information about schedules, the house system, transportation, who to contact about various issues, and lots more.  Please take a minute to look at our FAQs to see if perhaps we answer some of the many questions that are bound to arise as you and your child get ready for high school. The most useful FAQ categories for Freshman families are General, Logistics, House and Guidance, and METCO.

We usually have a section devoted to special education in our FAQ section.  We have not edited that section in a few years so it’s currently not available while we review and update it. If you click on that link, some out of date announcements may appear as a result of a technical glitch. The FAQs are not currently there, but look for these to return by the beginning of the school year.

Toward the end of the  year, we will also bring back our link to FAQs with important end of the year information. One thing to keep in mind is that freshmen will have final exams during finals week which bumps right up against the last day of school.  And as we all know, the last day of school can change due to snow days and is not finalized until some time in April. So it is best not to make plans at the end of the year without accounting for the possibility of additional days. At South, the policy is that students may not take final exams early. That means that if your student is not in school during finals week (which includes a make up day for students who are ill on the scheduled day of an exam), then they will have to make up their exams on designated days during the summer.

And here are a few important dates to keep in mind in the coming weeks:

  • Thursday, August 30th Freshman Ice Cream Social at South from 2:30 to 3:30 PM
  • Thursday August 30th, Fall Sports Night at 7PM (Meet the Athletic Director and Coaches)
  • Thursday, September 6th Freshman Parent Night at 7PM
  • Wednesday, September 26th Back to School Night at 7PM

“Welcome to South” Information Sessions for Incoming Freshman Parents/Guardians with Principal Joel Stembridge

We have scheduled several information sessions for the parents of incoming freshman in the coming weeks. Please RSVP for one of the following evenings with Principal Joel Stembridge. These meetings are for adults only, and parents/guardians need only attend one session as the same information is covered at each. Because these sessions are held in the homes of host families and there are a limited number of slots, we ask that only one parent/guardian register to attend a session initially.  If we have additional openings as the sessions get closer, we will let parents know and welcome a second parent/guardian to register at that time. If we do not have additional space, we ask that only one parent or guardian attend the session. Principal Stembridge will speak for one hour giving an overview of Newton South and then answer questions for the second hour. Please RSVP below for the date that works best for you. If you are unable to attend any of these sessions, you will have an opportunity to hear about freshman year at the Freshman Parent Night scheduled for Thursday, September 6th at the high school.

Newton South College Planning Guide is Online

Did you know that Newton South has a College Planning Guide?  At Newton South, we understand that students take different paths after they graduate. While the majority of Newton South graduates pursue some form of post-high school education, the Counseling Department has designed this Guide to be relevant to all Newton South students and families contemplating college and other educational or vocational options. To access the online version of the guide, click here.  Hard copies of the guide are also available in the College and Career Center for $10.
