RSVP to Attend a Freshman Parent Information Session

We are still taking sign ups for the freshman parent information sessions scheduled to take place in the next few weeks.  Please RSVP for one of the following evenings with Principal Joel Stembridge. These meetings are for adults only, and parents/guardians need only attend one session as the same information is covered at each. Because these sessions are held in the homes of host families and there are a limited number of slots, we have set up the rsvp responses so that only one parent/guardian may register to attend a session at this time.  If we have additional openings as the sessions get closer, we will let parents know and welcome a second parent/guardian to register then. Principal Stembridge will speak for one hour giving an overview of Newton South and then answer questions for the second hour. Please RSVP below for the date that works best for you. If you are unable to attend any of these sessions, you will have an opportunity to hear about freshman year at the Freshman Parent Night at the High School on September 7th.

Monday, August 14th, 7PM at the home of Michele and Andrew Copelotti, 63 Broken Tree Rd., Newton Center. Click here to RSVP.

Thursday, August 24th, 7PM  at the home of Sharon Perkulis and Jhonatan Rotberg, 143 Wiswall Rd., Newton Center. Click here to RSVP.

Tuesday, August 29th, 7PM at the home of May Chiu, 111 Lincoln St., Newton Highlands. Parking on Bowdoin or Lincoln Streets.  Click here to RSVP.

Wednesday, August 30th, 7PM  for parents/guardians of students receiving special education services at the home of Suzanne and Lee Feldman, 8 Fredana Rd., Waban.  Meet Special Education Department Chair Melissa Gamble along with Principal Stembridge. Click here to RSVP.

We are still in the process of organizing one additional information session for the parents/guardians of METCO students.  When we have finalized the date and location, we will send out an announcement with that date.

Looking for One More Host for Freshman Parent Information Sessions

We are still in need of one more family to host an information session for incoming freshman parents. We like to hold these sessions in the homes of incoming freshman families so parents have a chance to get together in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.  Principal Joel Stembridge will give an overview of the freshman year experience and answer questions from parents. The sessions begin at 7:00 PM and are finished by 9:00 PM. We already have three sessions scheduled in the last two weeks of August, so it would be great to have one earlier session for families who plan to be away later in the month.  Monday or Tuesday, August 14th or 15th, are available dates. The average size of the sessions is about 40 people and the hosts provide some very light refreshments.  The PTSO can provide folding chairs for extra seating.  If would consider hosting an information session, please email info@newtonsouthptso.org.

SouthFest Urgently Needs Volunteers! Please Sign Up!

Thanks to all the parents who have volunteered so far to help at SouthFest or made a donation to support this great event. We have great food, entertainment and decorations.   But we need YOU to make SouthFest safe and successful!   We don’t allow senior parents to volunteer at the event, so we depend on non-senior parents to pay it forward  by volunteering, knowing that other parents will take a turn to ensure your kids’ fun and safety when it is their turn for SouthFest. And though it takes place late at night, it’s a lot of fun to meet other parents and spend time with the seniors at SouthFest.   SouthFest takes place on Tuesday June 6 from 11:45 PM to 3:00AM.  We are urgently in need of chaperones and casino volunteers, primarily for the late shift, 1:00 to 3:00AM (though we still have few early spots).  We could also  use a few volunteers for the clean up crew after the party.  Please click here to volunteer for a shift at SouthFest.

We are also still in the midst of raising funds for SouthFest. We are just about half way to our goal, but still  need a lot of help from the community to get us the rest of the way. Please consider making a donation to support this great event.  Click here to donate online or find out how to donate by check.

Freshmen Postural Screening Program Will Take Place January 9-13

Massachusetts General Laws (M.G.L. c.71, s.57) require that all public school students in grades five through nine be screened annually for the early detection of spinal problems. This is not a diagnostic service but a screening program to identify children who should have further medical evaluation.

The screening consists of observations of the student’s back when standing and bending forward and will be done by a school nurse or Physical Education, Health and Wellness teacher.  Boys and girls are screened separately and privately.  The results are recorded in the confidential school health record.  If your child has any unusual findings, you will be notified and asked to have your child seen by a health care provider.

Students are asked to remove their shirts.  Girls should wear a bra or halter top to permit more accurate observation of the back.  If students do not have the type of clothing that permits observation of the back or refuse screening, they will not be screened and a notice will be sent to parents/guardians that screening was not done.  Follow up should be with the student’s health care provider with documentation submitted to the school nurse.

If you choose not to have your child participate in the Postural Screening Program, please notify the school nurse and submit documentation of postural screening by your child’s health care provider.

Please feel free to contact the school nurse with any questions about postural screening.

Fall Guidance News Specific to Ninth Graders

Counselors will be meeting with their freshmen in seminars for the second time in the coming weeks to assist them in their transition to the high school – a new phase of their lives with all its exciting and sometimes exasperating challenges. Throughout the year, this series of meetings focuses on the composition of the freshman class; honoring diversity; understanding school procedures, rules, and regulations; becoming familiar with teachers’ expectations; understanding themselves as learners; reviewing study habits and decision making; as well as discussing other issues relevant to the freshman experience.

You are encouraged to call your child’s counselor at any time with any question or concern you may have as your child starts his or her high school career. We want to help to make this a most positive and productive period of growth for your children.

Reminder: Freshman Parent Coffee Tomorrow, Sept. 16th at 8am

The first freshman parent coffee is tomorrow,  Friday, September 16, from 8 to 9:30AM at the home of Joanne and Mark Hooker at 73 Erie Ave., Newton Highlands.

The NSHS PTSO holds grade-wide parent coffees three times during the school year. This is an opportunity to meet as parents to ask questions, discuss issues, and get to know each other. We have no set agenda, other than checking in with each other about topics relevant to the school year. The coffees operate like open houses and are very flexible. Parents are welcome to come late or leave early to fit their schedules.
