Freshmen Postural Screening Program Will Take Place January 9-13

Massachusetts General Laws (M.G.L. c.71, s.57) require that all public school students in grades five through nine be screened annually for the early detection of spinal problems. This is not a diagnostic service but a screening program to identify children who should have further medical evaluation.

The screening consists of observations of the student’s back when standing and bending forward and will be done by a school nurse or Physical Education, Health and Wellness teacher.  Boys and girls are screened separately and privately.  The results are recorded in the confidential school health record.  If your child has any unusual findings, you will be notified and asked to have your child seen by a health care provider.

Students are asked to remove their shirts.  Girls should wear a bra or halter top to permit more accurate observation of the back.  If students do not have the type of clothing that permits observation of the back or refuse screening, they will not be screened and a notice will be sent to parents/guardians that screening was not done.  Follow up should be with the student’s health care provider with documentation submitted to the school nurse.

If you choose not to have your child participate in the Postural Screening Program, please notify the school nurse and submit documentation of postural screening by your child’s health care provider.

Please feel free to contact the school nurse with any questions about postural screening.

Fall Guidance News Specific to Ninth Graders

Counselors will be meeting with their freshmen in seminars for the second time in the coming weeks to assist them in their transition to the high school – a new phase of their lives with all its exciting and sometimes exasperating challenges. Throughout the year, this series of meetings focuses on the composition of the freshman class; honoring diversity; understanding school procedures, rules, and regulations; becoming familiar with teachers’ expectations; understanding themselves as learners; reviewing study habits and decision making; as well as discussing other issues relevant to the freshman experience.

You are encouraged to call your child’s counselor at any time with any question or concern you may have as your child starts his or her high school career. We want to help to make this a most positive and productive period of growth for your children.

Reminder: Freshman Parent Coffee Tomorrow, Sept. 16th at 8am

The first freshman parent coffee is tomorrow,  Friday, September 16, from 8 to 9:30AM at the home of Joanne and Mark Hooker at 73 Erie Ave., Newton Highlands.

The NSHS PTSO holds grade-wide parent coffees three times during the school year. This is an opportunity to meet as parents to ask questions, discuss issues, and get to know each other. We have no set agenda, other than checking in with each other about topics relevant to the school year. The coffees operate like open houses and are very flexible. Parents are welcome to come late or leave early to fit their schedules.

Winter Guidance News Specific to Ninth Graders

Academic Progress & Social Transition to High School

As we’ve reached the halfway mark of the ninth grade, we certainly hope that your child has been experiencing a smooth transition to high school. We hope your son or daughter has begun to get involved in one or more of the numerous teams, clubs, and ensembles available to South students. If your child has not begun to find a niche at South, it may be helpful to speak with his or her counselor about what opportunities exist that match interest areas. Please reach out to your child’s counselor if you have concerns about his/her overall transition.

If you have concerns over a particular course(s), please feel free to contact the individual teacher(s). Generally, email is the best method to contact the teacher to arrange a time to speak on the telephone or in person. Any students receiving any term grades of D or F will be invited to participate in the After School Program from 3:30-5:00 on Mondays and Thursdays. Any student can choose to participate in the Homework Club, which meets at the same time. During the school day, please encourage you child to make use of the departmental help centers (Writing, Math, Science) and J Blocks with their classroom teachers. If you child is recommended for Small Studies in the Student Support Center you will be notified by your child’s classroom teacher and/or school counselor.

Course Selection

Students will be reviewing course options for next year in the coming weeks. This presents an excellent time to talk with your children about their interests, abilities, talents, and future aspirations. Encourage them to consider the most beneficial selection of courses in light of their future plans. It is important that they create a schedule that ensures their eligibility for the type of higher education/post-secondary path they seek, allows them to explore different academic and elective interests, and keeps in mind the necessity for maintaining a balance in their lives among academic, extracurricular, family, and work obligations.

Freshman SOS Forms Due

Next week, all Newton South 9th grade students will be participating in the Signs of Suicide (SOS) school-based suicide prevention curriculum in their Health and Wellness classes. Your child should be bringing home a letter detailing the program and a consent form for their participation. Please review the letter from Principal Stembridge and have your child return the signed consent form to her/his Wellness teacher. Please remember to select only one option for your child’s level of participation.
