Swiming and Diving

Since the swimmers couldn’t attend the awards day, Coach Martin sent us his remarks regarding the team awardees.

Girls Awards

Award of Excellence V- Iris Ham is an exceptionally hard worker.   Since Freshman year has been a leading scorer on our team and a part of 2 record-breaking relays.   Her ability to compete in all 4 strokes is a testament to her skill set, but her major focus is breaststroke.   Iris’ 3rd place finish at the DCL meet also makes her a DCL All-Star.

Award of Excellence JV.  Alexandria Kuo began the year as a JV swimmer, but by our 3rd meet had dropped so much time that she became a consistent scorer in all the freestyle events.  Alexandria is a lead by example style of swimmer and her ability to take on the most challenging races has always been a key signature to her effort.  Alex has major goals for next season including breaking the 1-minute barrier in the 100 free.

110% Award.  Angela Yee was given a classic choice of Team first or Me first to begin the challenging ’21 season.   Obviously, Angela chose team first, put her head down, worked hard, and had her best season for the lions.  Angela led every single practice set this year.  She finished first in every single practice set.   Her ability to continue to challenge and push herself daily shows great promise of another 2 years of success.

Boys Awards

Award of Excellence V. Nicola Hensch is a professional swimmer posing as a high school junior.  Every record our boys’ team has broken in the last 3 years will have the name Hensch attached to it.   Nico is so much more than just the fastest to ever wear the orange and blue.   Our team looks to him for guidance, leadership, energy, and knowledge.  He is the epitome of having another coach on deck; except that he can dive in and challenge any other 4 kids to a relay on his own.  If ever there is someone deserving of ‘An award of excellence”; it’s Nico.

Award of Excellence JV. David Fischer wins his award for grit and determination.  David tried out for the team a year prior and did not have much success.   Some folks might let that deter them, but for David, he set a goal.  Not only did David make the team this year; he worked his butt off and by year’s end showed off the skills to come back next year and compete for points.  David’s 58 to end the season was no mistake as he and Eyal were hard workers all season.   Congratulations on the well-deserved award.

110% Award. Eyal Tamir – What a competitor.   Eyal’s sophomore year was out of nowhere.  Eyal decided to take on the 3 most challenging high school races.   He competed and placed in the 200 IM, 200 Free, and 500 Free all season long.   Eyal spent every practice trying to chase down Angela; and at max effort.   Eyal also was a part of our most exciting moment of the season; even though we couldn’t cheer as a team, you could feel the energy build up as our entire team encouraged and willed Eyal to his 5:57 in the 500 free.

Rethinking SouthFest – Brainstorm Mar 2nd at 7PM

Hello Parents/Guardians!

Though we are all hopeful for the COVID vaccine and herd immunity, we will need to wait for State guidelines on school events and gatherings to determine what the PTSO could organize this year for SouthFest, a celebration for Seniors in early June.  Families from all  grades get involved to create a memorable occasion for each graduating class.  SouthFest is a PTSO event, organized and staffed by parent volunteers.

Prior to COVID-19, SouthFest is the annual Newton South High School party that brings all Seniors together after the Prom at the school (regardless if they attended Prom) in June.   Newton South families and community organizations work together to create a safe and fun event that brings the graduating class together. There is a different theme every year for SouthFest, the school is transformed to evoke that theme, and the stage is set for an exciting party. There are games, prizes, a casino, entertainment, food, surprises and fun.

This year, we are hopeful to create some celebration can take place.  COVID-19 will still be present and we need to rethink SouthFest.   Please join us and bring your ideas.

From Vice Principal: March Schedule Updates

Hello South Students and Families,

Some reminders for the upcoming weeks:

1. Special Election on Tuesday, March 16: Even though K-8 schools in Newton are adjusting their schedules to accommodate polling stations, Newton South schedules will remain the same this week, with Cohort A and C students attending school as usual on 3/16.

2. Wednesday, March 24: There will be NO SCHOOL for ALL students (including students that usually come to the building on Wednesdays) as it will be the final Professional Development Day for South staff.

3. Course Registration for next school year: More info to follow but, for now, please be aware that the process will begin a bit later than in previous years–with teachers beginning course recommendation conversations during the first two weeks of March with final course verifications happening before April vacation.

4. COVID Pool Testing on March 1st: The school committee has approved a COVID pool testing program to begin at both high schools on March 1st. You will be receiving communication from NPS over the next 10 days with information about the program, eligibility criteria, opting in procedures, etc.

NSHS Interim Vice Principal

Parents! Newton South Needs YOU!

Parents, if you’re passionate about making Newton South a great community for our students, consider taking on a role in the PTSO next year.

In these roles, you will partner closely with South’s new principal and the administrative team to ensure successful PTSO programs and events. These programs support our faculty, staff, and students to help enrich the high school experience.  After this difficult year, these programs will be more important than ever.

The following PTSO leadership roles are currently available for 2021-2022:

  • Member for the Grants Committee (meet 3 times a year, minimal commitment – high impact)
  • co-chairs for Freshman Orientation (opportunity for incoming parents – help organize welcome sessions before school starts)
  • Newsletter Editors (work behind the scene only, be the first to know what’s happening)
  • Liaison for Newton SEPAC

Last, but not least, the PTSO needs 2 volunteers to be co-Presidents.   Work with current President this Spring and get to know the administration and committee chairs.

Next year seems far away, but planning has already begun and the transition of roles will start this spring.  Please email current PTSO President May Chiu at info@newtonsouthPTSO.org to further explore these available opportunities.
