Junior Parents Night – Wednesday, January 23, 7PM in Field House (snow date 1/24)

Dear Parents/Guardians of the Class of 2014:

Happy New Year! It’s the time of year when we begin to focus much of our time and attention on juniors. The Newton South Guidance Department cordially invites you to attend Junior Parents’ Night on Wednesday, January 23rd at 7:00PM (1/24 snow date) in the NSHS Field House. This important evening will formally begin the post-high school planning process.

No matter how long we have been working with high school students, it is always exciting to play a part in launching them into young adulthood. The evening of the 23rd will allow us to introduce you to many of our resources and best practices for working in partnership with you and your son or daughter. Principal Stembridge will begin the evening, followed by Barbara Brown, our College and Career counselor who will talk about her vital role in the college planning process. I’m pleased to also have an opportunity to speak with you about some of the things you might expect going forward. I’m particularly delighted that John Mahoney, Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Boston College will be our distinguished guest speaker.

Upon completion of the program in the Field House, counselors will meet with the parents of their students in break-out groups. If you’re not sure who your son or daughter’s counselor is, please ask them. During the groups, a range of topics will be covered, including an admissions overview, testing schedules, researching colleges, gap year and other important information. Time will be allotted for questions and answers, but because we expect many parents to attend and hope to cover as much information as possible, please reserve specific questions about your child for another time.

Counselors will hold Junior Planning Seminars with students on Friday, January 25th during B Block. At that time, students will be given their Naviance passwords and discuss other useful information. We know the college and post-high school transition can be an anxious time for parents and students, but I want to assure you we are here to assist through this important milestone. I hope all of your questions will be answered over the course of the evening, but for even more information, please refer to the Guidance Department link on the Newton South website.

I look forward to seeing you on the 23rd.
