The Newton Public Safety and Transportation committee will meet at 7:45pm this coming Wednesday, March 6 at City Hall to discuss the following proposal which may worsen this traffic flow and cause drivers to seek alternative routes through surrounding Newton Villages.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation, has been widening Rt. 128 between Dedham and Wellesley with the addition of a traffic lane. As a component of the Rt. 128 “Add-a-Lane” project, the Mass DOT has proposed changing Exit 20 (for the interchange to Rt. 9) in the manner described below.
- Elimination of the current full, free flowing cloverleaf already in place.
- Introduction of two left hand lanes to permit westbound Rt. 9 traffic onto southbound Rt. 128 and eastbound Rt. 9 traffic onto northbound Rt. 128.
- Introduction of two stoplights to control these movements.
The meeting will take place in the main Aldermanic Chambers on the Second floor. This topic will be the first and only item on the agenda. Both MassDOT and the Department of Conservation Resources will be there.
