South Math and Science Superlatives

Science Team: The Newton South Science Team placed first in the West Suburban Science League. At one of the five West Suburban meets, they tied their best single meet score with three first-place events and one second. More recently, the team placed eighth of sixteen in a marine science competition called the Blue Lobster Bowl at MIT and fifth of thirty-two at the regional event of the general science competition the National Science Bowl.

AIME Exam Qualifiers: Based on their performance on the American Mathematics Competition Exam, the following students were invited to take the American Invitational Mathematics Exam on March 15. Math Team: The Newton South Math Team recently qualified for the Massachusetts Association of Mathematics Leagues, which indicates a consistently high performance in the five monthly Greater Boston Mathematics League meets. They also received tenth place at a state competition called the Harvard-MIT November Tournament against competitors such as Acton-Boxborough High School, Phillips Exeter Academy, Lexington High School, and Newton North. In this competition, they also placed second in a high-stakes speed round at the end of the tournament. Several math team competitors have placed well in the AMC exam and will go on to state level.
