Winter Sports Superlatives

Big thank you to Athletic Director Scott Perrin, Assistant AD Ryan Augusta and Secretary Barbara Castoldi for all the evenings spent managing all the NSHS winter sports events! Also special shout out goes to the Booster Club for their untiring support of all athletic events at NSHS all year long!

Freshman Kalena Wang (Girl’s Gymnastics) and Senior Jung Park (Boy’s Indoor Track) have both been named to the Boston Globe All Scholastic Teams in their respective sports for the 2012-2013 Winter Season.

Basketball (Boys), after reaching the play-offs for the first time in four years, the Lions team won an exciting close game against West Roxbury, but then lost in a hard fought battle against #1 seed Mansfield, 72 – 56.

Basketball (Girls) had a huge upset over #1 seed Newton North and beat Durfee for spot to compete in play-off semifinals against #4 seed Franklin. Senior Captain Kayla Burton scored her 1000th point this season!

Gymnastics (Girls): Despite injuries suffered by Sally Jenks and Camilla Hernandez, this year’s team made their first appearance at States and placed 4th in the State! Freshman Kalena Wang scored 10th in the States All Around, but getting to States was truly a team effort, including exceptional balance beam and all around effort of junior co-captain Kaela Meyer.

Ice Hockey (Boys) finished its 2012-2013 season with a record of 8-9-3 (Overall), 4-5-1 (DCL/MVC), which was good for 19 points and the best record for NSHS Boy’s Hockey in 18 Years. Juniors, James Donlan and Oleg Musatov, sophomores Griffin Connolly, Edward Friedman, and freshman Thomas Tresca were named to the DCL All-Star Team; senior captain, Peter Block was named to the All-Conference team. With the strong number of underclassmen returning, for 2013-14, things are looking up for the Boy’s Hockey program.

Ice Hockey (Girls): Karina Alfisher and Kayla Kee lead us in another awesome season! With Kayla as our go-to offensive defender and team builder we were steadily working 110% every minute we spent on and off the ice. Karina Alfisher was rock solid again, saving many more pucks than any goaltender we played against throughout our season. Karina too was a steady team builder, worked at 110% in everything that she did all season. Maddy Donlan finished her 5 years of South Hockey with effort and a clear love of the game and our team. Our underclassmen followed the seniors, working hard, giving everything they had and cheering for each other in every practice and game. Another lovely season with the fighting Lions.

Indoor Track: The boys placed 3rd at the DCL Championships, while the girls track team placed 8th. In the All-State Track Meet:

  • Jung Park placed 1st in the boys’ 55 meter hurdles
  • Freshman Rebecca Grusby placed 4th in the mile–she also has the fastest time for the mile of any 9th grader in the country!
  • Girls 4 x  800 meter relay placed 8th
  • Alekhya Chaparala, Rebecca Grusby, Lucrecia Aguilar and Lizzy Fineman ran at All-States in the 4 x 8 relay.

Skiing (Downhill): The Newton South Alpine ski team had a successful season on the mountain and will be graduating eight seniors this year, including captains Suzy Landon, RJ Hayes and Julia Goldberg. The girl’s team finished fourth in the league, including two third-place races. The boy’s team had two fourth-place finishes and landed themselves fourth in the league. Individually, Suzy Landon was acknowledged as finishing in the top-ten in the league, landing her a spot in the state race. Sophomore Jessica Landon joined her sister at states as she finished 13th in the league standings. At the state race, Suzy and Jessica found their best results in the giant slalom, finishing 34th and 58th, respectively. In the slalom Suzy finished 73rd, while Jessica wasn’t far behind with a 75th place finish.

Wrestling: (Written by Senior Patrick Fabrizio) Under the guidance of Coach Rototori, Coach Fagen and Coach Zeigarnick, the 2012-2013 wrestling team battled through a tough year with many injuries, but also had many successes on the way. This close-knit team often struggled in dual meets, but had many great individual performances throughout the regular and post season.

Highlights of the post season included 3rd place sectional finishes for Captain Patrick Fabrizio and Tyler Siegal and a first place finish for Captain Lucian Cascino, who went on to place 4th in Massachusetts’s Division 1.

Newton South hosted the State Tournament. Big shout out to the Booster Club and wrestling parents for their help making everything run smoothly.

At Sectionals, we had four wrestlers place at the tournament:

  • Gabe Betencourt (106 weight class)   6th
  • Tyler Siegal    (113 weight class)        3rd
  • Pat Fabrizio    (195 weight class)        3rd
  • Lucian Cascino (Heavy Weight)  CHAMPION!

At States, Lucian continued his run through the “big boys” and placed 4th which qualifies him to wrestle at All-States.

At All-States, Lucian was 2 points away from making the top 6 in the state and qualifying for New Englands.
