Special Message About Monday, April 22 at Newton South

Dear South Community,

Today was a somber day at South given last week’s tragedy, and also one of reconnection for both staff and students. It is wonderful to see friends and teachers again – and while much remains the same, there is a real sense that a lot has changed during our week apart.

It is so difficult to know how best to approach the events of the past week with our students, especially in a classroom environment. Some students were personally affected by the events, and others may not have any connection, or may feel guilty about not feeling a certain way.

We emphasized today that we are a community, that we care about each member of our community, and that each person has a role to play in actively constructing an environment that is welcoming, inclusive, and safe.

We held a moment of silence during our homeroom/advisory block, and teachers talked with students as the need arose throughout the day. Guidance counselors were also available should students (or staff) need additional processing time.

As always, please contact your child’s guidance counselor should you have question or concerns, or feel that it would be helpful.

Best regards,

Joel Stembridge
Principal, Newton South High School
