The results of the latest Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) administered to Newton middle and high school students every two years since 1998 are now available. The survey is largely based on a similar survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Questions on the anonymous and confidential survey focused on issues such as substance abuse, violence and safety, as well as physical and mental health. Highlights of this year’s survey include a continued decline in tobacco use among Newton youth, a decrease in bullying, but a slight increase in alcohol use and in reports of students who are worried about school, social and appearance issues. For more information about the survey, how it is administered, how the data can be interpreted, and a summary of the results, visit the Health and Human Services Department website here.
