According to Head Varsity Football Coach, Ted Dalicandro,
“Austin Burton is a hard-working freshman on the Varsity football team. As the season progressed, Austin found himself in the unlikely position of being the varsity starting quarterback. Austin was having great success as the JV quarterback, leading them to a 6-1 record. His passion for the sport is matched by his work ethic: Austin wakes up early everyday to make to it South by 6:00AM. That level of commitment is not often seen in high school athletes but is seen in those high school athletes that are successful and would like to continue on to the next level. Austin is not just a gifted athlete; he is a committed student who is always a pleasure to be around. Austin’s upbeat, hard working attitude is contagious, his work ethic has spread to his teammates and many have committed to showing up at 6:00AM to improve their skills. Austin won his first start of the season in week 8 against Malden Catholic leading Newton South to a 24-0 victory. It is very rare for a freshman to play varsity football, and even more rare for a freshman to start as a quarterback. His maturity and leadership skills will benefit Austin and the Newton South football program in the future.”
