Athlete of the Week — Katie Doran, Senior, Co-Captain of Field Hockey

According to Varsity Field Hockey Coach, Hannah Clarke, “Senior Katie Doran is the rock of the Newton South Varsity Field Hockey defense.  She is always ready to throw down a block tackle and stop an opposing offender in her tracks or expertly pressure the other team’s players into a situation where they cough up the ball.  But she’s not just a strong defender; she also starts all of our offensive drives with a powerful hit from the backfield that travels all the way to our forwards beyond the 50-yard line.  Katie was one of three varsity captains this season, and she was always ready to offer important game-related insight at half-time and pull the team back together after we were scored upon by the other team or suffered a tough loss.  Her leadership extended off the field as well; always being the first to organize important events and to make sure all is well with everyone on the team, from the freshman to the seniors.  But without a doubt, Katie’s best qualities are her positivity and perseverance.  The wins haven’t always been in her favor, but she comes off the field smiling and ready to go out there and tackle the next challenge, and she inspires the rest of the team to do so with her.  The team will miss her skills on the field and her leadership, but she certainly has big things ahead of her, and we wish her all the best!”
