The role of the Newton South School Council is to advise the Principal on issues of general interest and school improvement plans. The council is comprised of administration, faculty, parents, and students. Over the 2015-16 academic year, the NSHS School Council has continued its work around later school start time by educating the community, hosting two forums for parents, and supporting the School Committee’s Working Group on late start. In addition, the Council has discussed Growth Mindset and hosted a parent discussion on this topic in April. We look forward to continuing to focus on these topics as well as other important issues for the community.
The term of office is two years, with the ability to run for a second two-year term. Members are expected to attend meetings one Tuesday of each month from 4:30 to 6:00PM during the school year (October to June) and occasionally meet/collaborate between meetings to move key initiatives forward.
This year we have three open seats and two members running for re-election. We extend a grateful thank you to Jodi Detjen and Liz Hizer whose terms are ending this year and who have been tremendous assets to the Council. Chris Steele and Risa Shames, who have completed their first terms, will be running for re-election. Sue Flicop (2017) and Cathy Shaw Bassett (2017) are in the middle of their term.
Candidates should submit a brief statement of up to 250 words to address the following:
- Identify the elementary and middle school attended by your NSHS student
- Particular interest, background, skills, and expertise that have prepared you for the role
- Qualities you would bring to the School Council
Please submit statements to firstname.lastname@example.org by 5:00PM on May 13. Elections will be held online starting on May 16 and ending on May 30 at noon. New members will be invited to attend the final meeting of this year, Tuesday June 14. Come make a difference at Newton South!
