Newton South’s Jazz Ensemble has been selected to compete next weekend at the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz festival sponsored by Jazz at Lincoln Center. This is the pinnacle of jazz festivals in the United States and only 15 bands from around the US and Canada are selected. Our award-winning student musicians will travel to New York, attend workshops with the musicians at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and then perform at the Lincoln Center as part of the competition. Newton South is the only new contender among the finalists, and the only band from Massachusetts.
In addition to this prestigious competition, the Jazz Ensemble recently performed as one of 12 finalists selected from across the nation to participate in the Charles Mingus High School Festival at Rutgers University, where they were awarded the “Spirit of Mingus” award. This honor followed closely on the heels of winning a gold medal at the MAJE State Finals in March.
Lisa Linde has been the Director of the Newton South Band and Jazz program for 20 years. She is one of few women in a field dominated by men, and has been the driving force in creating and nurturing an award-winning music program that has included hundreds of students.
You can see the Newton South Jazz Ensemble perform alongside all South’s other hugely talented music ensembles at the upcoming Newton South Pops Concert, on Thursday, May 24, at 6PM in the Cafeteria.
