Registration for Spring sports

Registration for Spring sports is now open.  The link to register can be found here: https://www.familyid.com/organizations/newton-south-high-school

Please hold off from making payment until teams have been selected.  Deadline to register is Friday, March 13th.

8th Grade sports night Wednesday, March 11th at 6:30pm

Please mark your calendar for the 8th Grade sports night on Wednesday, March 11th at 6:30pm in the Field House! This is an opportunity for incoming 8th graders and their parents to learn more about NSHS sports.  Athletes and Coaches from each sport will be present to answer questions.

Girls gymnastics

Girls gymnastics had 7 girls that competed at the State Individual meet last Monday!

In the All Around competition Newton South had Lila Sherman, Bella Valente and Dalani Ramos.  In the individual events competition Newton South had Claire Slack, Shanna Lacey, Arielle Cohen-Oliveira, and Anna Zeren.  The team heads to sectionals this Saturday for a huge meet! If they make top 4 in the sectional meet they will move on to the State meet!

CONGRATS: Girls Basketball team

Congratulations to the Girls Basketball team on their exciting win over Cambridge last Friday!  This win clinched a share of the DCL Large title!  The team also won the Spartan Classic over Presidents Day weekend by defeating Belmont 41-28 and Masconomet 46-44 in OT!  Boys basketball lost two very close games to finish out the regular season but finish with a 13-7 record.  Both teams are now waiting for seeding for the MIAA Playoffs.

CONGRATS: Boys Hockey

Congratulations to Boys Hockey on defeating Newton North 4-0 last Saturday!  This win qualified the team for postseason play. Prior to the game both teams honored their Seniors and game proceeds went to the Newton Police Memorial Fund.  This was a great way to support those who serve and protect us.  Newton South Seniors are: Eric Donlan, Sebastian Pike, Michale DeFranco, Kevin Eswara, Aram Tashijan, and Alex Klapes.

 

Wrestling team result

The Wrestling team had an excellent showing at the Division I Central Sectional Tournament Newton South entered 10 wrestlers and had 6 of them place and 2 wrestlers are CHAMPIONS!  Congratulations to Adam Bernhardt (138 lb) and Phillip Amitan (145 lb) on capturing the sectional title at their respective weight class.  All of that hard work is paying off just at the right time.  Other place winners were Mark Nazzro (5th), Akiva Lind (5th), Zachary Wagner (5th), and Sun Wangsakan (6th).  The top four place winners move on to next week’s Division I State Tournament and 5th place is the alternate.  This past weekend, Adam reached the 30 win mark for the season and has 99 career wins.  He is one win away from becoming only the 3rd wrestler at Newton South to reach the 100 career win milestone.  Phillip got his 20th win on the season as well.

Unified Track and Field informational meeting on Thursday, February 27

Unified Track and Field will have an informational meeting on Thursday, February 27 during J-Block in Cutler commons. Interested athletes and partners should attend the meeting. Coaches Kevin Flynn, Alex Strongin, and Brian Delenski will attend the meeting.

Open gym for softball

Open gym for softball will be held each Thursday after February vacation in Gym B from 3;30 – 5;30 PM.

Girls Gymnastics team won the DCL Dual regular-season champion award

The girls Gymnastics team won the DCL Dual regular-season champion award and they are the DCL champion for the 8th year in a row. The team is competing Saturday, February 22 at the North Sectional. Congratulations to the following gymnasts on qualifying for the State Individual Meet! Coach Calzone says: ” It is a very competitive meet to qualify for and it shows the gymnasts  hard work over the season” All Around: Bella Valente, Lila Sherman, and Dalani Ramos. Vault: Claire Slack and Anna Zeren. Bars: Arielle Cohen-Oliveira, Shanna Lacey and Anna Zeren. Beam: Claire Slack. Floor: Claire Slack. The 2020 State  Girls Gymnastic Individual Championship will be held at Tewksbury High School on Monday, February 17.

All-Around Competition:  1:00 pm
Individual Events: 4:30 pm

Boys Gymnastics team

The Co-Op boys Gymnastics team won their 6th State championship Friday night. Representing South on the team are Andre Michaels and Jona Henderson. Both athletes placed high in all apparatus with Jona winning the All-Around medal. Coach Steves brings his knowledge and passion for the sport and co-coaches the team with North coach Bill Martin.
