COVID-19 Student Testing – Final Weeks

Thank you to all families who have participated in our weekly COVID-19 pooled testing in our schools. The testing program has played an important role in keeping our school communities healthy, especially as we returned more students to our buildings in April. Newton, as a community, has been very successful in achieving high vaccination rates and the incidence rate has continued to drop to very low levels over the past several weeks. Given this good news, and with the end of the year approaching, we are planning to wind down our testing program:

The final week of testing for our high school students will be next week (week of June 7). This includes testing for students who participate in sports and other extracurricular activities.

We will be back in touch before the start of the next school year with information about testing for the fall, following guidance from the state and in consultation with Newton Health and Human Services and our Medical Advisory Group.

Track and Field Division 1 State Relays

From Coach McChesney, Girls Coach

Newton South’s Track & Field team participated in the Division 1 Track and Field State Relays on Saturday, May 29.  This is a big meet with 38 teams participating. All events are relay events.

Due to weather conditions, the girls’ team ran two relays.

Our 4 x 100 shuttle relay did a great job placing 7th with a stellar time of 1:11.58. That team included Nicole Woo, Jilly Mcleod, Christine Zong and Amelicha Trinidad-Gonzalez. Each of these girls neared their best times despite cold, rain and wind.

Massachusetts is comprised of four divisions in the East and also a West/Central division.

Our distance medley relay team (Lily Bulczynski, Kaity Shaughnessy, Sofia Arboleda, and Amelia Everett) ran the fastest time among all divisions beating all teams in all divisions by 28 seconds. The team is currently the fastest team in the state and 24th in the nation. Just before the race the wind blew down the timing tent as well as others on the site. If our students could have run this relay in decent conditions, they would have moved up the rankings. Despite this, the team, ran a blistering time of 12:22.71.

From Coach Norton, Boys team:

Our 4 x mile team won the Division 1 relay race with a time of 18:17.5, a new school record that has been standing since 2010! The team included runners Will Lavey, Jonathan Orelowitz, Bret Miller, and Cam Dion.

Brendan Weissel and Noah Taube-Perrotta tied for 2nd place in the High Jump with a leap of 5′.05.75″

The 4X100 relay finished 5th in 45.29 and the 4 x 800 relay team finished 10th with a time of 8:35.98.

The team had a great day finishing 9th out of a field of 22 teams.
