PTSO Committees

Alumni Committee: Liaisons for alumni community.

Class Liaisons: Parent representatives that provide support for grade-specific activities. Mostly this will involve organizing grade-specific “What to Expect Coffees,” and helping to build community among parents/guardians.

Data Committee: (Email Coordinator/Membership/School Directory) Handles anything related to the PTSO database. This includes maintaining database, sending email communications, overseeing donations and recording into database, putting together school directory from database including formatting, copying and distribution.

Grants Committee: Reviews applications and makes grant awards in accordance with PTSO guidelines and budget, normally twice per year in the fall and spring. Email:

Grounds: Helps maintain and beautify the gardens/grounds around the school building.

Health, Safety and Crisis: PTSO liaison for any issues of health, safety and crisis at the school, member of the Newton South Crisis Team.

Hospitality: Responsible for and/or assists with teacher appreciation and community building events such as Coffee Breaks (providing food and drink for staff on the day grades are due in fall and winter), Potluck Dinner, Faculty/Staff Back to School lunch and End-of-Year Breakfast, grade level “What to Expect” coffees, gifts.

METCO Liaison: Provides PTSO support for the METCO program if desired by the NSHS METCO Counselor.

Music at South: Provides parent support for the music program (band, orchestra, choir) at Newton South.

Newsletter Committee: Compiles pertinent information for the Newton South community, drafts copy, edits content and disseminates weekly PTSO newsletter. The PTSO newsletter is the main source of all Newton South High School information from the principal, administration and Newton Public Schools.

Political Action: Follows political activities of interest to the Newton South community and advocates for our school at the city, state and national level.

Potluck Dinner: A parent-staff dinner to foster community where parents provide the food and drink for all. Normally held in March.

Programs: Organizes educational speakers or activities for parents.

PTSO Website: Provides technical support and content posting for the PTSO website.

School Council: PTSO liaison to the School Council.

School Spirit: Organizes and promotes activities related to school spirit.

South Fest: The senior after-prom party held at school from midnight to 4:00 AM focused on having fun safely.

South Stage: Provides parent support for the theatre program.

Special Ed PAC Liaison: Represents Newton South special education parents at the Parent Advisory Council and keeps the community informed of any items of interest.  Jo-Louise Allen, Holly Schneider

Teacher Representative: Represents teacher interests generally and at PTSO board meetings.
