Winter Sports Game Schedules & Travel Requirement Update

Games schedules
We continue to work with the DCL preparing game schedules. They will be posted once that the league confirms levels and sites. Please check your emails since our in-season coaches communicate changes using your contact information.  Thank you for your patience and flexibility.

Traveling outside MA
If you are planning to leave MA at any time during this break please revise the DHH advisory for returning to MA.   The city of Newton requires a PRC Negative test up to 72 hours before arrival or require a 14-days quarantine before you can rejoin your in-person activities.

If you have questions regarding travel requirements please contact our school nurses, Mrs. Kiritsy and Mrs. Kramer

Please follow your protocols, wear a mask at all times, use proper hygiene during and after practices, and make wise choices. By doing so we can have a successful season.

Strength and Conditioning Clinic

A Strength and Conditioning morning in-person clinic open to out of season athletes will start on Monday, January 4. The clinic will have 2 cohorts of 30 students each. Cohort 1will take place Monday and Wednesday, Cohort 2 will meet on Tuesday and Thursday. The  sessions will be held at the Field House and will start at 7 am and finish at 8:15 am. Entrance to the FH will be by the side doors closest to the Cutler entrance.

Coach Rotatori will run the sessions.

You have to register by December 29 by using FamilyID. Registration open Monday, December 21.

The program is free of charge. However, students have to turn in a current physical to enroll.

Covid -19 symptoms form have to filled the night before attending the sessions.  Mr. Rotatori will share the link with all registered students ahead of time. For tracking purposes, attendance will be taken at each session. Students have to choose a cohort and stay in that cohort for the rest of the season.

New Unified Team – Strength & Conditioning Team

New pilot Unified Team:

This season, NSHS is adding to our athletics programs. The Unified Strength and Conditioning team is a new team supported by the MIAA and in association with Special Olympics of MA. The Unified Strength and Conditioning team is offered across the state as a pilot for this year. It strives to promote climates of dignity, respect, and inclusion for students beyond the classroom. This team is a competitive program that will involve winning and losing scenarios. The primary focus is to gain new skills, reach personal goals, and to participate on a team that represents NSHS.

Sports Specifics:

  1. Being a Unified Athlete: Unified Sports emphasizes the importance of being a TEAM, by showing respect and supporting your fellow teammates; working to improve as equals.
  2. Ratio: Unified Strength and Conditioning is a team of High School students, with a 50-50 ratio of students with and without IDD (intellectual developmental disabilities).
  3. Practices: Are remote and once a week after school, during the Winter season. Starting Monday, January 13, 2021, and ending February 21. (Wednesdays from 4:30 – 5:30)
  4. Exercises: Each athlete will compete by tracking their personal growth in 7 exercises throughout the season.
  5. Scoring: Each athlete’s progression is recorded at three different times during the season with points awarded for improvement. The team total is then compiled and submitted to the MIAA; where it is then compared against other participating MA teams. A champion school is then determined from all participating team’s scores.
  6. Coaches: Familiar unified coaches Mr. Strongin and Mr. Deleskey will be leading our athletes to train and compete together on Zoom meetings.

All student performance contributes to the overall team success. (Not just the fastest or strongest athlete).  To participate, students need to make the following commitments:

  1. Participate in all Zoom practices held after school for 1 hour.
  2. Register on Family ID before Thursday, January 7.
  3. PHYSICAL EXAMS: All students must have a current health physical on file in the nurses’ office. Submit to: [email protected] [email protected]
  4. CONCUSSION AWARENESS TRAINING: Concussion class links are located on this page on the right-side panel. Please view the class before completing the registration.
  5. All participating students must display appropriate behaviors, be tolerant of all participants, and enjoy working out!

Unified Sports was first developed by Special Olympics, as a means of providing a quality sports experience for training and competition in an inclusive environment that enables friendships to form. Unified Strength and Conditioning is a new opportunity for Unified Athletes and Partners to connect, compete, and continue developing a great community during these interesting times. Similar to our other NSHS unified programs, we strive for inclusion. We firmly believe that the opportunity to participate in education-based athletics is a unique and important part of our culture. All of our students deserve this amazing experience.

Students and families interested in this program should contact Mr. Strongin and Mr. Deleskey.  This pilot program is free at this time.

Athletic teams news

We made it! The fall season is complete and it was very positive for the Lions!

We measure success by evaluating the main objective of this year;  fostering student connections, creating opportunities for enjoyment, and to channel their stress in a healthy and safe way. By all measurements, our season was a success.

Some highlights of last week:

Boys varsity soccer defeated Westford Academy 3-2 to earn a trip to the DCL cup semifinals vs Concord Carlisle. The team played its best soccer of the season creating many opportunities to score. In the end, CC prevailed yet our players had an excellent game.

Girls varsity soccer hosted CC in semis defeating them 1-0 in Overtime! The team hosted the DCL finals vs Westford Academy winning the title by winning their match 2-0 in regulation time. A proper farewell to the seniors that were part of many postseasons successes in their years at South.

The girls’ Cross Country team finished 3rd at the DCL championship held at Lincoln Sudbury on Saturday. Lily Bulczynski was our top scorer finishing 6th overall.

The Boys Cross Country team clinched the DCL championship title at LS. The Lions placed all their runners in the top 10 positions and finished first with a 12 point difference over second-place Concord Carlisle.

The Field hockey Varsity team finished their season with an intrasquad game under the lights. The players and coaches had a chance to come together one more time to enjoy each other and to have fun. The team will hold the MS clinic on Monday, November 16. The clinic reached its limited inscription of 50 players!

The Strength and Conditioning clinic closed on Thursday. Our first ever clinic was a huge success. We are grateful to coach Matthews for his work helping out of season athletes to stay in shape.

At the end of the awards, Madalin Small and Olivia Dubin will SLI for their respective colleges.
