Highlights about Boys cross country

The Boys Cross Country “Can Food Drive” for the Newton Food Pantry concluded on Tuesday Oct.27. The team continues its support of our community by their annual collection of nonperishable items for our local food pantries. Living by our core values and creating community during these challenging times has been this team’s trademark. Coach Norton and Coach King are pleased with the leadership that the team captains have demonstrated. In Coach Norton’s words “Captains Will Lavey and Dan Glickman are doing a fabulous job with the team. Their approach to teamwork is very inclusive and outcome specific with a focus on team respect, fun, and value for the community.”

The team also excels at the races this season. Here are some highlighted runners:

Brett Miller has anchored the team by winning every race.

Jonathan Orelowitz has shown great improvements since last season with a couple of close 2nd place finishes.

Eero Helenius has been very consistent and reliable in his ability to hold off opponents and capitalize on securing solid points for the team.

The team will host its last meet of the season tomorrow, Saturday, October 31 at Cold Springs vs Concord Carlisle. Both teams are undefeated in the DCL. The race starts at 1:30 PM.

Parking at Cold Springs is limited. All spectators are required to wear face masks and check-in at the admissions table with their Boys XC Lanyard. Thank you for your cooperation.

Way to go Lions!

Winter Sports

There is limited information that we have regarding the winter season. This is what we know at this time:

The first week in November the EEA and the MIAA will release information on winter sports.  MIAA sports Committees are working on potential guidelines that will be the starting point for our league to create a proposal regarding the winter season. Once they release the winter sports “recommendations”, we will coordinate with Newton North to create a proposal that applies to both High Schools under our respective leagues, and that follows the COVID guidelines given by Newton HHD at that time.

The proposal will have to get approval from our school committee to be able to offer winter sports.

What can you do at this time?

Please update your child’ss physical and make sure our nurses receive the update before November 23. DESE and EEA require that the MIAA member schools only accept in-person physicals for sports activities. Our nurses can not accept telehealth physicals or letters from doctors.

Visit the NSHS athletic page and learn about the Newton Public Schools protocols regarding COVID communication as well as the current protocols for practices and games. Please remember that we are in an ever-evolving situation and we will need to adapt to the guidelines that will be released in November.

Where to find information once that winter sports are approved?

We update the Athletic Information page as new developments are happening. Please check it often!

Athletic Teams

Athletic teams are in the middle of their season Fall season. our athletes and coaches are connecting and working together with a focus on the students well being and enjoyment. Our sub-varsity programs show a considerable growth and development of their fundamental skills while demonstrating competitiveness against opponents. Last week our JV A Field Hockey team and our JV A Boys and Girls soccer teams outscored Weston, our JV Golf team had great matches against Waltham and our Cross Country JV runners are developing a strong base for the future.

Our Boys and Girls soccer varsity teams split their matches with Weston in a very competitive series.

Field Hockey used their series vs Weston as a learning opportunity that produced the first win of our program vs Westford Academy this week!

Our athletes and coaches are committed to the COVID safety protocols making this season possible. Keep up the great work!

MIAA sportsmanship essay or Short Vidoe

The MIAA is inviting student-athletes to submit Sportsmanship essays or short videos this year. The theme of the contest connects acts of sportsmanship with diversity, equity, and inclusion. This topic aligns with our school work on anti-racism and to our commitment to inclusion. The title of the essays and theme for the videos is: Describe how sportsmanship promotes the opportunity for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on your teams, in your school, and in your community.

The deadline to submit the work is December 4, 2020. There is a monetary award for the first and second place in each category. You can work with teammates to prepare the video or to co-write the essay.

Guidelines for the submission can be found here
