Sign up by May 1 for Class of 2020 Yard Signs

Dear Newton South Senior Families,

If your Senior has not completed the survey sent out to get feedback about events & graduation, please have them complete it ASAP so their voices can be heard.

Thank you for your enthusiasm to help and for all the suggestions we have received already.  As you know South has formed a committee of faculty, senior students and parents that will be looking at how to do senior events, especially graduation, working with the restrictions we have but trying to be as creative as possible.  The PTSO will continue to share the ideas to the committee.

Our first effort to celebrate the Class of 2020, the PTSO, with support of NSHS, will be providing congratulatory lawn signs for all 480 seniors & their  family.  Please sign up by May 1st at this link: https://signup.com/go/CTkAGPL.  Note the signs are not customized to each student.  Pick up information will be sent out in separately email.  Thank you.

The PTSO Board is looking to do all we can to help make celebration memories for our class of 2020, and will communicate plans as soon as we get information.

Health Occupations Student Club Seeks Donations for COVID-19

We hope that you and your loved ones are safe and well during this unprecedented and stressful time. There is no question that COVID-19 has permanently changed our view of disease and of our own vulnerability. We at the Newton South High School’s Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Club feel tremendous gratitude to the countless healthcare workers who put their own lives on the line to help those afflicted with COVID-19. With that in mind, we have decided to mount our own campaign to help our local hospitals battle this pandemic.

There are two ways people can help:

First, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is asking for iPads so hospitalized patients can talk to their loved ones at home. If you can donate your old iPads, we can all help reduce the social isolation for hospitalized patients. We can do a contact-free curbside pick-up if you live in the Greater Boston Area. All the patients and the hospital will undoubtedly appreciate it!

Here is the link if you are able to donate an iPad:

https://forms.gle/uNiNPnzKYFphKM4h8

Second, if you do not have an old iPad but would still like to join us in our fight against COVID-19, we have also started a GoFundMe page to help the Massachusetts General Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center through their fights against COVID-19. Every dollar donated will go towards saving the life of a doctor, nurse, friend or neighbor. Even though we are all apart, we are all in this together!

Here is the link if you would like to donate money to our Go Fund Me:

Please consider donating to our iPad and fund campaigns so NSHS HOSA can help these wonderful local hospitals during this devastating COVID-19 crisis.

#NewtonTogether on Mon, April 20

THE LAUNCH OF #NEWTONTOGETHER  – Let’s stay connected as a community in the face of COVID-19!

On Patriots’ Day/Marathon Monday, April 20, we invite all Newtonians to make handmade #NewtonTogether signs and display them in your windows. Get creative and share the incredible joy, strength, and resiliency of Newton. Just because we can’t gather for the Marathon this year, doesn’t mean we can’t connect!  Tag your creations in the Facebook event or on social media with #NewtonTogether.  For more information, click to view flyer HERE.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
You can do two things to make this a success:

  1. Help spread the word — share, post, tag, etc. — to make sure all Newton residents know about it.
  2. MAKE SIGNS.  Then put them up to show your Newton pride!

WHERE THE IDEA CAME FROM:
The idea came to the Mayor’s Office from Newton resident Rakashi Chand:
Let us bring our community together in a shared message of perseverance and pride. Let us inspire one another as we are and always have been an unwavering city, that has stood tall and united in the face of adversity and overcome again and again, every challenge, hardship, tragedy and crisis.  We will persevere, we will fight in every way we can, we will unite and we will see the dawning of a brave new day. This epidemic will make each day harder than the last, but we will persevere, we will face the challenges that present themselves, because we are strong. Let’s find a way to inspire our citizens, and remind them that we, like our forefathers and foremothers, will overcome this, and find ways to raise each other up with hope.
