Save the Date for Winter Awards

Save the Date!

The winter awards will be held on Saturday, February 20, in the morning. The celebration will be modified to do it safely and following the protocols in place.

The awardees and their parents will be invited to attend at a specific time to received the award from their coach and to take pictures with their parents.

Award winners will enter the Field House using the Brandeis road door at their scheduled time exiting the building by using the door next to the loading dock.

Here is the schedule for the morning

  • 10 AM- Girls basketball-V-JVO-JV B
  • 10:15 AM -Boys Basketball-V-JV-9thgrade
  • 10:30 AM – Boys Hockey V-JV
  • 10:45 AM  – Alpine Boys and Girls V-JV
  • 11 AM – Nordic Ski- Girls Gymnastics
  • 11:15 AM – Swiming and Diving Boys and Girls
  • 11:30 AM – Unified Strength and Conditioning
  • 11:45 AM – Girls Hockey- Boys Gymnastics. (co-op teams)

Coaches will communicate with the awardees previously to the event.

Winter Season Senior Athletes Honored

Our teams completed the regular Winter season this past week and they acknowledge their Senior players during the games.

The Girls’ Gymnastic team honored Carly Eswara, Martina Haruturian, Shanna Lacy, Isabella Valente, and Dalani Ramos at the end of their virtual meet vs Acton Boxborough. Parents of the Seniors were invited to watch their last meet.

The Newton “Crush”, Girls Hockey co-op team celebrated their Seniors at the rink before their game vs Needham. South captain Yael Shivner and North co-captains Duchnowska and Sliwa were honored by their teammates and their parents. The team will play at Needham on Saturday.

The Boys Basketball team had a Senior presentation before their nail-biting game vs Wayland. Captain Max Arcari, Jace Peeples, and brothers Sam and Dan Prudovsky were honored by teammates and their parents.

Friday night the Girls Basketball team had a special time before their Wayland game to recognize  Seniors Abigail Altman, Lily Altman, Erin McElduff, Amaris Mills, Abby Matthews, and Siobhan Murphy. Their parents were at hand to celebrate with them.

The Boys Ice Hockey team senior night was held before their last game of the series vs Waltham. The Seniors joined their parents at the rink for pictures. Honored before the game were  Senior Martin Androssenko, Tim Dobies, Nathan Lacoste, Milan Patel, and Ed Tarmey.

Last week, our Swimming and Diving team honored their Seniors. The Senior Girls are Kelly Cheng, Maya Hernandez, Kaity Shaughnessy, Tess Sullivan, Emma Wang, Amanda Yee. The Senior Boys are Zach Greenberg, William Lavey, Felix Song,  Walter Boyce, Alexander Chan, Christopher Fitzpatrick, Colin Holson, and Tomer Seagal.

The  Alpine team has several Seniors on its rosters. Skying with the team this season are Masie Abbiati, Alexa Firkusny, Saylor Flannery, William, Knight, Theodore Lewis, and Rebekka Tunik.

Winter Sports DCL Cup Schedule

Our teams had completed the last games of the abbreviated season and they are preparing for the DCL Cups that will take place next week.

  • The Swim and Diving team just completed their DCL virtual championship and it waiting for the league scoring.
  • The Girls Gymnastics team will compete at the DCL virtual meet on Valentine’s Day.
  • The Girls Basketball team is seeded 1st and will host the winner of the seeds 5 and 4 on Monday, February 15 at 4PM.
  • The Boys Hockey team is seeded 3rd and they will host Concord Carlisle on Tuesday, February 16 at 3PM at the JAR.
  • The Boys Basketball team is seeded 3. The team will travel to Acton Boxboro on Tuesday. The game will start at 5:30PM

All DCL finals will be played on Thursday, February 18.

Basketball and Hockey Team

Our JV teams had a very fun and successful season.  Our basketball teams had a chance to challenge all its players at the intrasquad games and their development showed strong during their Friday and Saturday games.

The JV hockey team played home on Sunday afternoon.

The Athletic Department is very grateful for the work of Mr. Padgett, Mr. King, and of all the student-athletes that help to stream the games each week.  NS games and meets through streaming was a real treat for families close and far.

Cheers to Amaris Mills – 1000 Points Club

On Wednesday, February 10, 2021,  Senior Girls Basketball player Amaris Mills reached a milestone when she scored her 1000 points wearing the South jersey. Amaris completed the feat during the girls’ game at Wayland High School. Welcome to the 1000 points club!

Swimming and Diving Update

The Swimming and Diving teams broke 5 school records yesterday at the DCL virtual meet.

Diver Esther Dansinger improved her old marks in both the 6-Dive and 11-Dive format.

Nico Hensch broke a 21-year-old 100 backstroke record!

Elisabeth Nesta, Zoe Zalkind, Jada Green and Claire Hooper broke the 4×100 Freestyle Relay record.

Nico Hensch, Daniel Chan, Shayan Bakhtyari and Felix Song broke the 200 Medley Relay record.

Oustanding meet for the Lions that are waiting for the final league results to be released on Sunday evening.

Unified and Conditioning Team

The Unified and Conditioning team completed its first season today.

Coaches Strongin and Deleski are impressed and encouraged by the commitment, dedication, and fitness that this team developed over a short period of time. The following Senior athletes joined others as the inaugural members of the team, Emily Ball, Anthony DePalma, Isabel Deveney, Daniel Doran, and Emma Turney.

Parents, Newton South Needs You!

Parents, if you’re passionate about making Newton South a great community for our students, consider taking on a role in the PTSO next year. There are openings for 2 PTSO co-Presidents and several committee co-chairs.

In these roles you will partner closely with South’s new principal and the administrative team to ensure successful PTSO programs and events. These programs support our faculty, staff and students and enrich the high school experience. After this difficult year, these programs will be more important than ever.

The following PTSO leadership roles are currently available for 2021-2022:

  • 2  co-chairs for Staff Appreciation Committee
  • 2 members for the Grants Committee
  • 2 co-chairs for Freshman Orientation
  • 3 Newsletter Editors (work behind the scene only)

Girls Varsity Basketball

Newton South Girls Varsity Basketball Maintains #1 position in the Dual County League Division

N.S. Girls Varsity Basketball maintained its first-place ranking tonight in its home game win against Acton-Boxborough. The win brings the Girls team to a 7-1 record, solidifying their leading position in the Dual County League and a perfect record in the DCL “Large” class school division. Tonight’s win is their 7th in a row.

Although the team was missing starting players Maddy Genser and Lilly Altman due to injuries, the team pulled off a 58 to 37 win against the 2nd place division team. The girls head into a rematch this Friday at Acton-Boxborough, finishing their regular season before the DCL playoffs begin on Tuesday, February 16.
