Tomorrow Oct 27 at 7PM NSHS Back to School Night

Dear Newton South Students and Families,

A reminder that Back to School Night is Tuesday, October 27th from 7 to 9pm.

  • Principal’s Greeting/Community Block 7:00 – 7:10
  • A block 7:15 – 7:25
  • B block 7:30 – 7:40
  • C block 7:45 – 7:55
  • D block 8:00 – 8:10
  • E block 8:15 – 8:25
  • F block 8:30 – 8:40
  • G block 8:45 – 8:55

Parents/Guardians will follow your student’s Wednesday schedule, using the same authenticated Zoom meeting links that students use to access each class. This will protect our faculty and community from potential Zoom bombing. Multiple family members can access the evening from different locations simultaneously, using the same Zoom links, if necessary.

Here is a document of faculty zoom links and passwords that you will use for each class with the corresponding block letter. As you will see, some teachers use the same zoom link and password for all of their classes. We have also asked teachers, wherever possible, to include Zoom meeting invites to be available in your student’s Google calendar for class meetings, for easy access.

We will begin in the Community/Advisory block with a welcome from Principal Mark Aronson and an introduction from your student’s Community/Advisory teacher before moving on to A through G blocks.

If you have any “free blocks” of time in your student’s schedule, you may visit the virtual PTSO room from 7:30pm to 8pm:

For any troubleshooting issues (i.e. if you forget a link, having difficulty logging on, etc.), I will be available from 6:45pm to 8:55pm at the following Zoom location:

You will also have the opportunity to view video welcomes from the NSHS deans, librarians and from the Newton Families Organizing for Racial Justice (links for these will be shared on Tuesday AM).

Teacher presentations will encompass introducing themselves and giving an overview of the course. The focus will NOT be on individual conversations about individual students. Each session is 10 minutes long with a 5 minute break in between. Please be on time for each session as it is disruptive to have to keep letting people into a meeting.

Sessions may be recorded for later viewing for families that can’t attend Tuesday night but we have asked teachers to “pin” themselves on Zoom so the recordings only show the teacher during the presentations, and not the parents viewing the presentation. The recordings will then be posted to your student’s Schoology page where it will remain for viewing until the end of the week. Another option for teachers who don’t record their Tuesday night session is to create/record/post their own video presentation in addition to the Tuesday night session, covering the same material that they addressed with their “live” classes, and having it available by the end of the week, also on Schoology.

High School Working Group Update

Dear Newton South and Newton North Parents/Guardians,

The High School Working Group (HSWG) can only succeed with the involvement and input from our key stakeholders in our school community and by learning from other district implementations. We also want to assure you, our parent community, that regardless of how we got here, the sense of urgency is clear for the HSWG to assess options for more in-person learning for all our 4,000 high schoolers in Newton.  As part of the parent representatives on the group, we wanted to provide some more details about the HSWG process and work ahead in the coming weeks.

On October 14, 2020, the School Committee convened the High School Working Group that includes representatives from a diverse group of community stakeholders. This working group has been charged by the School Committee to develop a recommendation to phase-in implementation of in-person learning at Newton high schools for this school year.  While the high schools started in full remote learning, students with high needs and special needs have been in the buildings since school started on September 16, 2020. The HSWG is now focused on expanding in-person learning for all of our high school students and is expected to complete our recommendation by November 30, 2020 to present to the School Committee on December 2, 2020.

The HSWG’s process includes outreach to parents, teachers, and students to ensure that we incorporate the needs and concerns of our stakeholders in our recommendations.  A survey link will be emailed on Monday, October 26th to all parents/guardians with high school students enrolled in Newton Public Schools.   Student Services, METCO, SEPAC and ELL departments will also be doing outreach to ensure those families have access and are able to complete the survey.  Please be on the lookout for the email from NPS with the link to the survey on Monday, October 26, 2020.  All survey responses must be received by Thursday, October 29, 2020.

All students and teachers will also receive surveys and will have the opportunity to respond during the coming week during class and/or Flex block. Please encourage your child to complete the survey. Both high schools will also have student focus groups next week to obtain further feedback.

The surveys are one of several data points that the HSWG is incorporating to ensure our school community is proactively represented in our work to develop our recommendation.  Initial survey results will be shared by Friday, November 5th on our dashboard at http://www.newton.k12.ma.us/npshighschoolplan. Based on the results of the surveys, we also expect to hold public forums and/or focus groups in the coming weeks, as we work toward our recommendations.

Concurrently with the stakeholder surveys, the HSWG is finalizing a list of school districts that have implemented a range of in-person learning models and will connect with them to learn about their experience and gather insights on their implementation.  This current list includes, but is not exclusive to, Lexington, Lincoln-Sudbury, Needham, Wellesley, and Westport, CT.  We appreciate the feedback and information that we have already received from many members of the community about these districts and their in-person learning models.  Lastly, the group will be diving into the known past and current obstacles next week so we can better assess any impacts on our recommendation.

To learn more about the HSWG work and progress,  please check our dashboard and please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions. We look forward to hearing your Survey responses and working together to support our high schoolers. Thank you.

South Stage Presents “Sense and Sensibility” streaming Oct. 30-31, Nov. 1 at 7:30 PM

South Stage Presents Sense and Sensibility: Oct. 30-31, Nov. 1 at 7:30 PM
Enjoy Newton South’s first Fall Play video production recorded live outdoors and streamed to your home!

A playful new adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of the Dashwood sisters—sensible Elinor and hypersensitive Marianne—after their father’s sudden death leaves them financially destitute and socially vulnerable. Set in gossipy late 18th-century England, with a fresh female voice, the play is full of humor, emotional depth, and bold theatricality.

Annual NSHS Bulb-Planting: Sun., Nov. 1 from 2-4 PM

Volunteers Wanted for the Annual NSHS Bulb-Planting

Please volunteer for our annual fall bulb-planting on Sunday, November 1, 2020, from 2-4 pm. This is a fun, socially-distant, and mask-wearing community initiative to work together and plant bulbs of hope for better things to come in 2021. With ample space around the school grounds, you can come solo or bring your whole family with you. Come for the entire two hours or just twenty minutes or so to tuck the daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, and snowdrops into the soil where they can root and surprise us all with spectacular springtime sensations.

If you can volunteer, please email [email protected] and [email protected].

We must therefore create a favorable environment that will encourage the flowering of our children’s natural gifts.  ~Maria Montessori
