As August approaches, pre-season sports will begin at South. A few important reminders:
Physical Examination Requirement for Participation in Competitive Athletics:
All students participating in competitive athletics must have an up-to-date physical examination. Massachusetts General Law (Chapter 71, Section 57) requires students participating in competitive athletics at school to pass a physical examination dated within thirteen months prior to the start of the sport season. The start of the sport season includes any scheduled practices. The physical exam must be performed by a duly licensed physician, physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner. According to Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) rules, a student’s eligibility will terminate once a physical has reached the 13 month limit. If your child’s physical expires during a sports season, an updated physical examination is required for continued participation. If your child is planning on participating in Fall Sports please make sure a physical is turned into the Athletics office on or before August 11.
Students participating in sports will now have to pay their user fee online or drop a check off at the South Athletics office made payable to Newton Public Schools. The fee schedule and payment information can be found here. Coaches will not be accepting payments.
Please contact Barbara Castoldi, the Wellness Department secretary, at Barbara_Castoldi@newton.k12.ma.us with any questions.
Please remind your student that the One School/One Book selection is Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. All students (including rising freshmen) are expected to read the book over the summer and be ready for a wonderful One School/One Book discussion in September! To borrow the eBook from the NSHS Library, students and faculty can login to the school’s FollettShelf eBook collection here using username: nshslibrary and password: pawprints. To read the eBook on a smartphone or tablet, first download the Follett Enlight App. More information is available at the Newton South Library site.

In this last newsletter of the 2013-2014 school year, we wish to thank all the many volunteers who make the Newton South community what it is — a valuable resource and reliable foundation for our kids and our families. We’d also like to thank the South teachers and staff, who give so much to our students, above and beyond curriculum and standards.
Please join us in thanking Lori Lass, on her retirement from the PTSO board, for her amazing dedication as co-President of the PTSO for the last two years. Her kindness, helpfulness, organization, and constant good cheer set the highest standard for PTSO leadership and continue to be an inspiration to us all.
Enjoy your summer! The PTSO newsletter will return in August!
Lori Lass (departing co-President) – Emily Prenner and Betsy Blagdon (co-Presidents for 2014-2015)
If your email address changes over the summer, or if you know a parent who doesn’t receive the newsletter, please click here to register. If you no longer have a child at Newton South, please click “Update your Profile” at the bottom of this email. If you will have a child at South in the future, please do not click Unsubscribe – we will not be able to add you later. To stay in touch with other South families over the summer, consider joining other parents in your grade on facebook. Click here for more info.
The online PTSO directory will be unavailable during the month of July, as we update the student records. The online directory will be available with a contribution to the PTSO again in the fall, after all the information has been confirmed. Please confirm your family’s information when we send the notice. We thank you for your patience in advance – 1400 families is a lot to process!
If your student’s information has changed or your student will NOT be attending Newton South in the fall, please email Jan O’Neil, the Newton South Registrar, or call 617-559-6500. Alternatively, if you know of a family moving INTO the Newton South district who will have a student attending Newton Public Schools next year for the first time, please encourage them to contact Jan as soon as possible, and to email the PTSO at email@example.com so they can receive important information in the newsletter. If your student already attends Brown or Oak Hill Middle Schools, you do NOT need to call, as registration is automatic from the feeder schools.
If you are interested in hosting an evening Freshman Parent Coffee with the Principal in August, focusing on either Special Education or the METCO program, please contact Emily Prenner and Betsy Blagdon at firstname.lastname@example.org.
