All-Grade Parent Coffee Fri, Feb 28th at 7:45AM

Based on community feedback and grade level coffee, the PTSO will be hosting 2 sessions for an All-Grade Parent Social.  The intent is to have our parent & faculty community connect with each other and learn how parents in other grades are navigating their experience at South and beyond.

It’s clearly a partnership between parents, teachers and child to navigate their high school experience.  There is no single answer, process or tool.  Growing up and building resilience in our complex world is our reality.   Please join us for our Newton South All-Grade Coffees:

  • Friday, February 28th from 7:45-9AM at Newton South Teacher/Faculty Lounge.
  • Tuesday, March 3rd from 7:30-9:30PM at May Chiu’s home at 111 Lincoln St, Newton MA

2020-21 WISE Individualized Senior Experience

Dear Junior Students and Parents:

Please consider the WISE (WISE Individualized Senior Experience) Program when thinking about your schedule for next year.  The WISE Program offers seniors the opportunity to work outside the classroom during Term 4 on a substantive educational undertaking of their own choice.  It is an exciting opportunity for students to work on an intensive project of their choosing focusing on one of four areas – academic, creative, community service, and/or career exploration.  WISE encourages students to develop their independence, confidence, and sense of responsibility as they take charge of their own learning. WISE also helps provide a bridge from high school to college, to a gap year,  or to work. Many of our WISE students look to our internships as an exciting way to gain experience or explore a career.

WISE is a Pass/Fail elective class.  Students receive academic credit for their work and, as part of the program, are also required to read material related to their topic, keep a journal/blog of their work and reactions, complete two interviews, and do a final oral presentation.

Some examples of past projects include:

  • Volunteer at an animal shelter

  • Internship in the medical field

  • Business Internships

  • Internship in government

  • Design a school mural

  • Scientific inventions/experiments project

  • Creative art/music project

  • Create a documentary

  • Volunteer in a Newton elementary school classroom

Interested students should sign up for WISE now, during the upcoming Spring registration, because space is limited and the Program always fills up.   It is course 910 in the Program of Studies. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Wise program coordinators.

Support International Travel in Our Schools!

Feel passionately about the power of international travel? Want to ensure no Newton students get left behind? Please consider volunteering for or supporting GELF, a financial aid fund that enables low-income Newton North and Newton South students to join international travel experiences through the schools.

There are several ways to get involved:

1) Join the GELF Corporate Sponsorships Board!  We are a fun team of parents who could really use a few more volunteers to reach out to local companies and businesses. No experience is necessary! Email Samantha Mandel at [email protected] to find out more.

2) Join the GELF auction team!  The May 9th GELF benefit dinner will include a silent auction and raffle, and we need a small army of volunteers to help us out!  Email GELF auction chair Lori Garg at [email protected] to find out more.

3) Donate tickets, vacation home stays, or items to the GELF auction!  Popular auction items have included craft items, vacation home stays, sporting event tickets, gift certificates! All donations are greatly appreciated. Email [email protected] to donate.

4) Buy a ticket to the May 9th GELF dinner or donate The May 9 GELF dinner is a fun 12-plate tasting event with 200 community members, a live band, and table service by the Newton Superintendent, principals and Mayor.   Can’t attend? Donate to support a teacher to attend the dinner instead, or make a straight up donation to make a student’s dream come true!

Thank you for supporting our students!
