Coffee with Superintendent: March 2, 7:45 AM

The 2020-21 Newton Public School budget process is underway.   High School enrollment in Newton is climbing.  Still want a later high school start time?

Please join us for coffee on Monday, March 2 from 7:45 am to 8:45 am in the Faculty Dining Room with Superintendent David Fleishman and members of the School Committee.  Opening remarks, followed by Q&A.  Refreshments will be served.

All-Grade Social – Tues., Mar 3 at 7:30PM

Join us for our all-grade parent social on Tuesday, March 3rd from 7:30-9:30PM at May Chiu’s home at 111 Lincoln St, Newton MA.

Course registration is in progress so it’s a great time for parents to meet and connect with each other and learn how parents in other grades are navigating their experience at South and beyond.

It’s clearly a partnership between parents, teachers, and children to navigate their high school experience.  There is no single answer, process or tool.  Growing up and building resilience in our complex world is our reality.  So grab a fellow parent/neighbor/friend and drop in at your convenience, enjoy a glass of wine and meet fellow parents at South.

Support International Travel in Our Schools!

Feel passionately about the power of international travel? Want to ensure no Newton students get left behind? Please consider volunteering for or supporting GELF, a financial aid fund that enables low-income Newton North and Newton South students to join international travel experiences through the schools. There are several ways to get involved:

1) Join the GELF Corporate Sponsorships Board!  We are a fun team of parents who could really use a few more volunteers to reach out to local companies and businesses. No experience is necessary! Email Samantha Mandel at [email protected] to find out more.

2) Join the GELF auction team!  The May 9th GELF benefit dinner will include a silent auction and raffle, and we need a small army of volunteers to help us out!  Email GELF auction chair Lori Garg at [email protected] to find out more.

3) Donate tickets, vacation home stays, or items to the GELF auction!  Popular auction items have included craft items, vacation home stays, sporting event tickets, gift certificates! All donations are greatly appreciated. Email [email protected] to donate.

4) Buy a ticket to the May 9th GELF dinner or donate The May 9 GELF dinner is a fun 12-plate tasting event with 200 community members, a live band, and table service by the Newton Superintendent, principals and Mayor.  Can’t attend? Donate to support a teacher to attend the dinner instead, or make a straight-up donation to make a student’s dream come true!

Thank you for supporting our students!

Ghana Exchange Fundraiser

Please consider joining me this Thursday, February 27, at 6:30 in the NSHS auditorium to support NSHS’s inaugural exchange with a high school in Ghana!

This April a group of NSHS students will travel to Accra, Ghana, to participate in an exchange with the Tema International School (TIS).  Students will shadow counterparts at TIS and will participate in learning excursions with their Ghanaian hosts. Then, in October, we will proudly host a visiting group of students from TIS here in Newton.

In addition, our fundraising event will benefit Luke’s Lights, which you can read more about here: https://lukeslights.org
