NEWTON SOUTH’S BOOSTER CLUB INFO NIGHT – JOIN US!
Wednesday, January 27th at 7PM

With winter sports underway, spring around the corner and a fresh new year ahead, we’re rebooting Newton South’s Booster Club. The Booster Club is a parent run organization dedicated to supporting our student-athletes, coaches, and athletic programs at Newton South High School. We also work to build school spirit through programs related to school sports.

Join us by Zoom to learn about how you can get involved, whether you’d like to volunteer to support your child’s sports team(s), work on an all-school community-building initiative, sell South spirit wear or contribute behind the scenes — we need you!  Help us think creatively on how we can best support ALL NSHS athletes and the broader South student community now and in the future.

Sign up here to attend the meeting on Wed, January 27th at 7PM and we’ll send you a link to attend. Can’t make it? Sign up anyway and we’ll follow up with you.

We look forward to seeing you!

NPS COVID-19 Communications Protocol

Due to rising COVID-19 cases in communities belonging to our league, several games are canceled at this time. We do not have control over these decisions and we have to keep our safety protocols without mixing teams and communities each week. Our students and coaches will keep practicing during this time developing skills for the future.

We are following the advice of our nurses and the Health Department to keep our students and our community healthy.

If you have questions regarding the NPS-Covid communications protocol please review it online. The protocol is posted on the athletic page under Announcements. You can also reach out to our school nurses if you need clarification on the policy.

Girls Gymnastics

Our Girls Gymnastics team had its first virtual meet scoring a high 138..5 points. The zoom recording of their performances is posted on the team page at

Boys Gymnastics

The boys gymnastics team is defending its state crown this year. Two gymnasts from South are competing in the team guided by coach Tom Steeves and first-year coach Rani Jacobson.

Hockey Teams

The Girls Newton Hockey team “The Crush” has six Newton South members representing the Newton community. The team split their series vs Braintree last week and they are competing vs Wellesley this week. Their next game is Saturday at Wellesley. The puck drops at 5:30 PM.

The Boys Varsity Hockey team open their season vs Waltham. The team played an exciting game-tying 2-2 on their first outing.   Saturday game vs Waltham has been canceled.

The Boys JV hockey team opened their season vs Concord Carlisle last Sunday under the guidance of first year coaches Jeff Pike and Alex Klapes.

Nordic Team

The Nordic team had their second race on Wednesday at J Martin Golf Club in Weston. They are racing again next Wednesday at the last slot of the day.

Alpine Ski Team

The Alpine Ski team opened their season on Thursday at Nashoba with a GS competition for Boys and Girls. Logan Flannery finished third among all boys while Saylor Flannery and Abby Abiatti finished 3rd and 4th on the girls’ side.

Basketball Teams

Boys and Girls basketball games vs Waltham were canceled this weekend due to Waltham teams’ quarantines.

On Tuesday our Girls Varsity team defeated Waltham 49 to 27.  The team also defeated Concord Carlisle last week splitting the series with the Patriots.

The Boys Varsity team defeated Concord both times by 30 points margins.

The basketball sub-varsity teams started their intra squad games last week. The girls played at CC winning their first contest with Ms. Hoffman and Mr. Allen as co-head coaches.

The Boys 9th-grade team had a very strong home game vs Concord Carlisle last Saturday.

Swimming and Diving Team

Our Swimming and Diving team opened the season vs AB competing only with the boys since AB doesn’t sponsor a girls team this season. The boys defeated  AB by a large margin. This week they are competing virtually vs WA. Final scores had not to be recorded at this time.

Register for Annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Summit

The Fourth Annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Summit sponsored by the MIAA, and the DEI committee will take place next week. The summit is spread on three days to allow the students to sign up for as many sessions as they can attend in an effort to accommodate all different schedules used at MA schools. Our students had attended this summit in the past bringing ideas and creating a more inclusive environment within our classes and fields.

Some of those initiatives were the creation of the Unified teams, the revision of our health curriculum to make it more inclusive of our LGTBQ+ students, and the socks, hats, and shoes collection for shelters in the area.

The registration is free and open to all students. Please check the summit program and register this weekend. Together we can make a difference at South.
