Student Webinar for Hybrid Learners Jan 19 & Jan 25

On Tuesday, January 19th, the South Deans will be hosting a student webinar during Flex Block (3:10 pm – 3:55 pm)

It will be geared towards those who will be engaged in hybrid learning.  Students, who have chosen remote learning, are more than welcome to come, but may not find the information as useful.  During the webinar, we will go over the basic changes to the building, as well as the implementation of safety precautions that students can expect during their in-person days.

If your student cannot attend, the deans will be sending out a recording afterward. We strongly encourage all students in Cohorts A, B and C to attend or to view the recording ahead of their return to the building.

The Deans will also be hosting a lunchtime Q & A session for students, on the same subject on Mon. January 25 from 12:20 pm – 12:50 pm. We will not be recording that session in order to maintain student privacy.

Links to the Zoom sessions for both the webinar and the Q&A will be in the school Schoology calendar, and students must log in with their NPS accounts to be admitted.

As always, students are encouraged to contact their counselors and/or deans if they have personal questions regarding their transition to HyFlex learning.

GPA Committee Findings and Update

Hello South Students and Families,

Please take note of the following items of interest:

1. GPA Findings and Summary Decisions from the South/North GPA Committee  For any questions about GPA and the decisions made by both South and North, please contact Director of Guidance, Dan Rubin: [email protected]

2. Wednesdays 1/20 and 1/27 are ninth grade orientation days. Our Student Life Coordinator, Tori Parker, sent out information regarding that event for ninth grade families. Classes for all grades will be asynchronous for the whole day on both 1/20 and 1/27. If you are a ninth grade family and didn’t receive information about the orientation days, please contact Mx. Parker at: [email protected]

3. End of term 2 for grade 12 is Friday, 1/22. A reminder that we decided to end term 2 a bit earlier than the other grades in order to ensure that term 2 grades can get processed and sent out to colleges in a timely manner. Report cards for grade 12 will be posted by the end of the day on Friday, 1/29.

4. End of term 2 for grades 9, 10 and 11 will be Tuesday, 1/26. Report cards for grades 9, 10, and 11 will be posted by the end of the day on Friday, 2/5.

5. Term 3 schedules will be posted and shared with students on Aspen, hopefully by the end of next week. We will let you know when they are available as students in the hybrid program, in particular, need to be aware that typical room assignments have changed due to room spacing and social distancing. Stay tuned for MUCH more information over the next couple of weeks from the South deans regarding the transition to the hybrid model on 1/28.

6. Approximately 270 juniors will be taking the PSAT on Tuesday, 1/26 and many of our teachers will be proctoring the exam. Therefore, know that all classes for all grades will be asynchronous that day EXCEPT for community block. We are asking students to log into community block at the regular time (2:35pm to 3:05pm) and then, if meeting with a club or getting extra help from a teacher, report to flex block. More information to follow.

Have a great long weekend!

Chromebook Update

Hello Students and Families,

You are receiving this email because currently you are registered to attend NSHS “hybrid” as we transition to hyflex at the end of January.

The Chromebooks that were ordered for our ninth graders in April 2020 unfortunately still have not arrived and may be delayed several more weeks. At the same time, all hybrid students will need to have a computer (Apple laptop, PC laptop, or Chromebook) with them at school each day. Therefore:

  • You may bring a personal laptop device with you to school.
  • If you don’t currently have a school-issued Chromebook or personal laptop device, but need one for hybrid, please complete this google form: https://forms.gle/SE1zBqmEGU4PxEZAA

Thank you,

NSHS Principal Search Survey & Update

Below is the email update sent by Superintendent Fleishman on January 13, 2021 to South Families regarding the Newton South Principal search process.   We have 2 parent volunteers from South on the SAC. Not every parent has an opportunity to support the selection of a new principal, so click to take the survey now to have your voice heard regarding what’s important.

Dear South Families,

As you are aware, Mark Aronson is serving as Interim Principal for the school year, and will be leaving in June. I am grateful for Mark’s dedication and commitment during this very challenging year. I know Mark will do everything possible to support the school through the end of the school year.

Selecting a principal is one of the most critical decisions made by a superintendent. Principals are expected to provide excellent educational leadership, establish a positive school culture, and manage the daily operations of the building. We have formed a Selection Advisory Committee (SAC) that includes administrators, faculty, students and parents/guardians. The SAC will conduct first-round interviews and recommend semi-finalists.

Parents and guardians will have the chance to meet the finalist candidates when they visit Newton South. We are also interested in getting your feedback on a series of questions as we begin the principal search https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QDC6ZLK.

While this has indeed been a most difficult year, we are excited about the opportunity to hire a new leader for Newton South, and I look forward to working with the South community as we embark upon this important task.

Sincerely,

David Fleishman
Superintendent of Schools

Hybrid Students: Bus Registration Due TODAY – Sun., Jan. 17

Dear NPS Family,

If your student has selected the hybrid model of learning and wants to take the bus, you MUST register by Sunday, January 17 at 11:59 p.m. Registration will close on Sunday, January 17 at 11:59 p.m.

If you do not plan to utilize the bus, there is nothing further you need to do right now.

If your student is not registered for the bus by Sunday, January 17 at 11:59 p.m., they will not receive a bus pass. Because of strict state guidelines for physical distancing in transportation, we will not be able to accommodate students who do not have a bus pass.

You may register your student for the bus through the MySchoolBucks portal at: www.myschoolbucks.com. For instructions on bus registration, please visit this link.

The NPS School Committee will vote on a prorated bus fee in the coming weeks and the cost will be invoiced to families following the vote. Financial assistance will be available and information will be included with the invoice.

As you know, our bus capacity is severely limited given the reduced seating capacity. We are encouraging families to walk or bike to school if possible.

Thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this issue.

Sincerely,

Transportation Department
