Tove Goldstone completed the US Equestrian Athlete Lettering program

Congratulations to Tove Goldstone who recently completed the US Equestrian Athlete Lettering program. This program was developed to provide recognition for the accomplishments of young equestrians and encourage their future involvement in equestrian sport. US Equestrian recognizes the dedication of equestrians preparing for competition through practice and training sessions as similar to other students in athletic programs and developed this program to honor individual achievements with a varsity letter in the student’s chosen sport, regardless of the availability of an equestrian team or club through their school. Participants in the program must be students in grades 5-12 who document at least 100 hours of training or provide verification of participation in three equestrian competitions during the year. After completing these requirements and verification, the student will receive a certificate commemorating their achievements, a varsity letterman patch and/or lapel pin for each year of participation.

Tommy Cable Brightlove Project

Dear Newton South Families,

On February 26, 2020,  we received news that Tommy Cable, a 2019 NSHS graduate, unexpectedly passed away.  Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

Tommy’s services will be on Saturday, March 7 at 1pm, with a celebration of Tommy’s life with music and hugs at the Angier School, at 1697 Beacon Street in Waban, from 6:30-9pm.  Please click here for more details

Tommy was an active member of our student community and was very involved with our music and theatre programs.   The Cable family is raising funds in Tommy’s name to set up a non-profit foundation, The Brightlove Project. The foundation’s goal is to  “destroy the stigma around mental health issues; to find a way to ensure young “adults” get real help managing their medications and prescription refills in college; and to bring therapy dogs into the college environment as often as possible.”  For more information about the project, please visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/tommy-cable039s-love-you-fund

If anyone would like to help with the Brightlove Project as a volunteer, or have recommendations for mental health professionals who could help the foundation implement their goals, please contact Anabel directly at [email protected].

The Newton South PTSO is contributing $250 to the project.  On behalf of all of us, our hearts go out to the Cable Family.

Regional Double-Goal Coach award to Assistant Softball Coach Richard Ward

Congratulations to NSHS Varsity Assistant Softball Coach Richard Ward for being selected as a Regional Double-Goal Coach® Award winners by Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA). Richard Ward has coached young athletes in Boston for decades with phenomenal results on and off the field. As a coach in Red Sox RBI (Reviving Baseball in the Inner City) program, Richard took a team of softball players who lost every game in their first season to undefeated for five years. Richard coaches young people in baseball, basketball, softball, and track, and helps them gain access to sports in and out of the city, including skiing.  One of the hallmarks of Richard’s calm, caring coaching is that he goes above and beyond for his players.  Consistently modeling respect for players, officials, opponents, and the game itself, Richard’s players learn to embrace this culture of respect.  When a player makes a mistake, Richard encourages them to “get the next one.” In guiding players to become the best they can be, Richard “lets them lead” enabling them to develop the confidence, grit, leadership and so much more to help them on the playing field, and in life.  With his focus on the joy of the game, Richard has helped many young softball and basketball players, track athletes, skiers, and more to reach for their goals, and thrive.
