Newton South Green Newton Project – Capture Carbon Commemorate COVID-19

My name is Ahona Dam and I am a sophomore at Newton South.
I am part of a group called Green Newton which recently initiated a
project called “Capture Carbon Commemorate COVID-19” with the goal of
planting a tree for every person who has passed away from COVID-19 in
Newton in 2020. As of right now, about 140 people have lost their
lives and more might be lost by the end of December. (I’m attaching a
flyer below)

Not only will this project honor victims of COVID-19, but also by
planting trees, we can watch them grow, and leave them for the next
generation to enjoy while helping to offset carbon emissions.

In 1970, Newton had 40,000 trees, but that number has dwindled to
about half that amount at around 20,000 trees in recent years. Trees
are vital to prevent soil erosion, flooding, and reduce air pollution.
Trees also contribute to aesthetic beauty and have positive effects on
human health. To plant 150 trees is ambitious, it would cost about
$22,500, but it can be done with the help of enthusiastic volunteers
and the forester Marc Welch, whose advice will be critical in bringing
this to life.

The President of Green Newton, Marcia Cooper, supports the idea and
has helped to find a couple of college students who are joining the
effort, but we need more people who can help us organize, fundraise,
and be involved in the planting and maintenance of trees this upcoming
Spring.

It would be great if the Newton South community (students, faculty,
leaders) would get involved with this project as we work on it this
Winter into the Spring.

SouthStage Live Stream Presentation: “Once Upon a Time on Zoom”, Nov. 27-29, 7:30 PM

Tickets go on sale for the pre-recorded stream of Once Upon a Time on Zoom on Friday, Nov. 20. Prices are $10 for individuals/$25 for families. The stream will be active on YouTube on Nov. 27, 28, and 29 at 7:30 PM each night. A link to the show will be included with your ticket receipt. There will be a different link each night, so if you want to see this clever night of short plays again, you should buy tickets for the following nights.

Please consider making a donation in South Stage. All donations are tax-deductible, and your generosity will be acknowledged with a listing in every South Stage Playbill for one calendar year. South Stage does not receive a production budget from the school other than modest stipends for adult directors. Although ticket sales typically cover production costs, we rely heavily on the funds raised through Playbill ads and donations to maintain and upgrade costumes, construction, lighting, and sound equipment.

Safety Protocols Reminder & Volunteers Needed for Juniors Event on Nov 20th

Dear Newton South Parents/Guardians of Junior!

The PTSO is sponsoring an event for the Class of 2022.  All students will receive an reminder email from Interim Vice Principal Hardiman by Wednesday with the same information about social distancing protocols.

Please remind your junior(s) about following social distancing guidelines to ensure we have a safe and fun in-person event.  Parents/guardians are responsible for determining whether their child(ren) can participate in this in-person opportunity.  You can drop off in the main parking lot.  Students can proceed to the circle area by the stadium to check-in.  All students must leave by 7:30pm.  Please arrange rides accordingly.  Thank you!

We do need more parent volunteers to support the event, please sign up if you can at https://signup.com/go/WQGsqmL.

Please note that all students must register for the event by noon on Thurs. Nov 19th.  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/127818168583

Hello Juniors!

The Newton South PTSO is excited to host this in-person event on Friday, November 20 from 5:30-7PM.   Join us for a night under the lights.  You must register for this event by noon on Thurs. Nov 20th at this linkhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/newton-south-grade-11-friday-night-lights-tickets-127818168583

Check-in is required and begins at 5:20PM at the parking lot area prior to entering the stadium.  Our priority is to ensure we have a safe event for this in-person opportunity. With the updated State Guidelines, we want to update you and remind everyone that it is a requirement for all participants to follow social distancing guidelines:

  • Masks at all times during the event
  • Minimum 6ft physical distancing (sitting or standing)
  • Avoiding close contact (talking and being less than 6ft apart)

Moving to different areas on the field to see classmates is fine, but guidelines state one should avoid any physical contact with another student and have close contact (sitting or standing and speaking while less than 6ft with a mask on). This includes all students, regardless if you have been previously exposed to on a regular basis. Physical distancing of 6ft apart should be followed at all times. Parent volunteers will be managing check-in, social distancing guidelines and exiting the stadium.

Looking forward to a safe and fun event everyone.   Thank you.

Photo Day (Grades 9-11) November 18, 2020

Even though it’s an unusual school year, the yearbook committee is still working hard to document as much of this time as possible. But they need your help.

Rather than have a traditional picture day, they’re asking all Grade 9-11 students and all faculty/staff members to submit their own portraits directly through the Yearbook Snap app.

(Note: We’re still taking Senior portraits through Prestige; contact Mr. Baron if you have questions on Senior portraits.)

Here’s how Yearbook Snap works:

  1. Take a photo of yourself that you’ll upload.

    1. It needs to be a head shot — just shoulders up.

    2. It needs to be vertical — no horizontal photos.

    3. Make sure your photo is well lit (it doesn’t have to be perfect, just make sure we can see you!)

    4. Try to pick a simple background (an empty wall, outside without too many things behind you, etc.)

  2. Download the Yearbook Snap app onto your phone or mobile device.

  3. Log in using our school code: regulus2021

  4. Swipe on “Newton South High School Select Photos”

  5. Select “Portraits”

  6. Upload your photo

That’s it! Do this by end of the day Nov. 18. We’ll also remind the students in Community and English class on Nov. 18.

You can also use Yearbook Snap to upload ANY photos you have of the school year, all year long. And we need photos!
